Description: A panoramic view from Flagstaff Hill (Maiki Hill), above Russell, showing the Bay of Islands. The houses of Russell (Kororareka) lie below to the left, with a house on a nearby hill in the foreground; Paihia mission station and houses are visible in the distance across the water left of centre. 'Waitangi. Mr Busby's house where treaty was signed' is noted and can be seen immediately left of centre. 'Keri Keri' (Kerikeri) is noted right of centre, across the water, with a few houses visible. Moturoa Island is next on the right, followed by Black Rocks and, on the far right, Ninepin Rock. There is currently no feature in the Bay of Islands called Nine Pin (or Ninepin) Rock. Description: A Maori family in the left foreground, with a man heading towards a path rising up a bush-clad mound, on top of which is the Pa, known both as Maketu from the name of its meeting house and as Otawhao. To the right is a broad plain with Pirongia mountain in the background. The meeting house is the tallest roof showing above the palisade. Other Titles - Otawhao Inscriptions: Verso - J. J. Merrett. Dec.r 1843 [inscribed on holograph poem "Wake warriors wake!" on the verso] A very similar ink and wash drawing is held in the British Library (Add. MS 19953, p. 20 plate 46), titled A Pah at Otawao, Waipa. The British Library drawing lacks the Maori in the foreground. There is also a drawing of the meeting house 'Maketu' by Merrett (Add MS 19953, p. 28, plate 72) and a more distant view of the pa titled 'Otawao Pah' (Add MS 19953, p. 28 pl. 73). The meeting house itself is illustrated by George French Angas (possibly copying another drawing by Merrett) in 'The New Zealanders Illustrated' - 'Maketu house, Otawhao Pah'. Description: A circular panorama. Shows the township of Akaroa and hills across the harbour and on the near side from a point between Ohae and Opukutahi, near Wainui. Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - [far left] Ed.d Norman; [centre] title; [far right] by Edm.d Norman Norman was resident in Lyttelton between the early 1850s and 1859. A view of Akaroa by Norman was described by the Lyttelton Times on 12 July 1856 as having been recently on display in the Lyttelton Town Hall, with drawing by Norman and colouring by Akaroa resident Samuel Charles Farr. Description: An extensive view of the Wairarapa Plain with Wairarapa Lake on the left, Rimutaka Range and Tararua Ranges in the background ("the snowy rnage in the distance is the Tararua Mountains"), a wild boar hunt in the foreground, with 5 Maori, 3 Pakeha men and four dogs and a bivouac noted on the plain to the right. Bracken and tree ferns in the foreground and clumps of bush on the plain. The accompanying text reads: This district lies about fifty miles from Wellington by the nearest road. Mr Charles Kettle, one of the Company's Assistant-Surveyors, ascended the Manawatu River, which flows along the other side of the Tararua Mountains, and entered this plain by rounding the low spurs at the extreme right of the view. The forest consists of the largest trees. The open tracts are covered with grass, feern and tutu bushes. Wild hogs abound in this plain. The Ruamahanga flows through the midst of it, and passes through Lake Wairarapa into Palliser Bay. The plain of the Ruamahanga is about sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twelve miles. There is one small native village at its northern extremity, and another on the beach at Palliser Bay, as well as a whaling station supplied from Wellington. Lake Wairarapa is ten miles long, and from two to three miles broad. Between the lake and the sea several settlers from Wellington have recently squatted with large herds of cattle, which they drove along the sea-coast. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s).
