Greymouth Bicycle Club :Bicycling and trotting. The Greymouth Bicycle Club will hold an...

Date: 1891

By: Greymouth evening star (Newspaper)

Reference: Eph-C-CYCLE-1891-01

Description: An arrangement of text, in different typefaces. There were 5 events including a 4 1/2 mile race of cyclists versus horses, where the horses were changed every 1 1/2 miles. The starter was H C Fricker, esq; judges were H Calders and A Broad; Lap-keeper was E P Heaphy; and the Clerk of the Course was P Swingland. The rainbow background was produced by using a "rainbow roll" before the letter printing was done. Due to adverse conditions, this event had to be postponed twice and finally took place on 28 October, attracting a crowd of around 500. The club’s captain Mr J W Easson undertook the challenge of racing 4.5 miles against a horse, the horse being substituted every 1.5 miles. Until the last horse began, it seemed the cyclist was well in the lead but the new horse “cut down the distance hand over fist”. A sprightly report of the meeting on appeared in the Grey River Argus, 29 October 1891. Date pencilled on the back by the Library; otherwise not given. Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s) on rainbow coloured paper.. Physical Description: Letterpress, on rainbow-coloured poster 448 x 281 mm.
