Description: The back and front cover spread of what is actually a programme for "Carmen up to data" in Christchurch in 1893, shows scenes from the show "Forty thieves", which had played the previous year at the Princess Theatre Melbourne. The illustrations mainly feature a beautiful dancing girl. In one scene she pours oil into a jar containing a person. In another she dances, watched by an admirer in a tree. "Carmen up to data" was a musical burlesque, a spoof of Bizet's 1875 opera "Carmen". It premiered at the Gaiety Theatre London, on 4 October 1890, and toured internationally reaching Australia by 1892. This cover has been overprinted for use in the New Zealand season. Description: Shows two young women, one European and one Maori, standing together under a carved Maori gateway, with a New Zealand flag wrapped around both of them. The Maori woman holds up a palm leaf. She wears a grass tunic and rata blossoms, and the European woman wears clematis. They may represent the bicultural nature of Zealandia. Attributed artist is Robert Hawcridge; information provided by Dr Polly Cantlon (26 September 2017), from a privately-owned volume of testimonials complied by Hawcridge in support of his application for the position of Head of School of Art in Dunedin 1909.
