LAYING TRAPS FOR WARSHIPS: THE RUSSIAN METHOD OF DEPOSITING MINES. From the above illustration an idea can be formed of the manner in which the ill-fated Russian mine-transport Yenesei deposited mines from her specially constructed stern, ports. When "the port was opened!, a, spar shaped like a T girder was ma.de to project from it; along the narrower part of the spar ran a, sliding hook, to -which, the mine was attached and drawn out until it overhung the "water. At the proper moment a cord' was pulled, which released the mine and let it fall into the water. The mine then moored itself automatically, as shown in the small diagram in the right-hand corner. The Yenesei was destroyed by one of her own mines at Dalny. —Illustrated London News. (Otago Witness, 04 May 1904)
