Served in World War I. Enlisted underage and joined the 2nd Auckland Battalian and later became a lewis gunner. Promoted to Lance Corporal. Fought at the battles of the Somme in 1918. Got flu at end of November and so went to hospital instead of into Germany. Returned home mid 1919 and worked as a builder. Army No. 46321.

Emmins, Arthur Robert, 1895-1996

Served in World War I, enlisted in 1916 and joined the 2nd Auckland Infantry Battalion and later transferred to the Army Service Corps. After fighting in the 1st Battle of the Somme, drove horses with supplies to the artillery until the end of the war. Went to Germany with the Army of Occupation. Worked as a cabinet maker throughout his life. Army No. 12/3632.

Living in Ohope at time of interview in 1985. Mr Blackwood went to Kawerau as an Electrical Enginéer with Fletcher-Merritt-Raymond, and worked on the construction of the pulp and paper mill from its very beginnings. He subsequently joined Tasman Pulp and Paper as Assistant Electrical Enginéer and rose to Chief Enginéer and Enginéering Manager, his position at the time of interview. Son of John Holmes Blackwood (1900-1963) and Magdalena (née Gordon; b 1901). Married Alison Jill (née Baker; fl 1954)

Nga Puhi and Ngati Whatua. Born at Ahikiwi near Dargaville. He worked at farming, bush work, fishing between 1930 and 1938. Served with the 28th Maori Battalion 1939-1946. Wounded in Crete, he spent 18 months in hiding, protected by the Cretan people, and took part in the resistance movement. During this time he met his future wife. Captured by the Germans, and sent to a Prisoner of War Camp near Bresslau. He was repatriated to England for medical reasons in 1944. After the War he returned to Crete and married Katina (Katerina) Torakis (b 1914). Farmed at Opononi 1946-1954. Worked in business at Trentham 1955-1965, then ran restaurant in Porirua 1965-1980. Became a Porirua City Councillor, later moving to Dargaville where he became a Dargaville Borough Councillor (1981-1984). Awarded CBE.
