Description: View of the church tower and other buildings of the Naililili Roman Catholic Mission on the banks of the Rewa River. A number of European men are depicted photographing the mission In August 1888 Dr Julian Vidal became the first Roman Catholic Bishop of a Pacific diocese centred in Fiji. With him came the first Marist Brothers and soon afterwards the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny. Schools were central to the Bishops missionary strategy -- churches would follow after. A day school for Fijians was established at the mission station on at Naililili, and by 1903 there was also a stone church Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).
