Description: Record of the tour of the Pacific Islands by members of the New Zealand Legislature in 1903 Photographs taken by Henry Winkelmann of Auckland (numbers 1, 38, 50-51, and 79) and G A Read of the NZ Government Printing and Stationery Department Very few of the people shown are identified Other Titles - Visit of members of New Zealand legislature to the Cook and other Islands, 1903 Inscriptions: Album page - The voyage, of which the accompanying photographs form a partial record, was undertaken in April-June, 1903, for the purpose of giving Members of the New Zealand Legislature an opportunity of seeing the Cook and other Islands, which were annexed to the colony in June, 1901. In all fifteen islands were visited, eight of them being within the extended boundaries of New Zealand, and the remaining seven belonging to one or other of the adjacent groups - viz., Samoa, Tonga or Friendly Islands, and Fiji. Description: Photographs of vegetation on Raoul Island, taken in 1944 by John Herman Sorensen. Publication note - Published in: W R Sykes. (1977). Kermadec Islands flora : an annotated check list. Wellington: New Zealand Dept of Scientific and Industrial Research Source of title - Title supplied by Library Sorensen was a member of the new Zealand Goverment's Cape Expedition to the Auckland islands, Campbell Island, and the Kermadec Islands during the Second World War. Though the main purpose of the expedition was coast watching for German and Japanese activity in these areas, a number of scientists were members of the expedition teams. This allowed study of the geology, climate, life and environment of New Zealand's subantarctic islands and the Kermadecs over a five year period. Quantity: 18 b&w original photographic print(s). Provenance: They were given to Bill Sykes by Sorensen for use in his 1977 book on Kermadec flora. Sykes gave them to Julia Brooke-White in 2004.
