The search for the missing schooner "Jubilee" by the NZGS "Tutanekai"

Date: 1920

From: Duncan, June (Mrs), fl 1997 :Photographs from the estates of Joseph and Frank Duncan

By: Duncan, June, active 1997

Reference: PA1-o-827

Description: On 15 August 1920 the auxiliary (with an engine as well as sails) schooner "Jubilee" left Auckland for Niue. She never arrived. By late October/early November the Government steamer "Hinemoa" had searched the Kermadeck Islands for her without success. HMS "Veronica" made enquiries at Niue on her way to Suva. On November 12 the Minister for Marine announced in Parliament that the Government steam ship "Tutanekai" would be used in a search for the"Jubilee". The "Tutanekai" left Auckland early in the morning of November 23. She called into Whangarei later on the same day to pick up bunker coal and left in the evening. She carried a party of men and women who were all probably relatives or friends of the crew and passengers of the "Jubilee". Two were mentioned in the NZ Herald of 23 Nov. as Mr E B Vaile (brother in law of one of the passengers, Mr Head), and Mr M Champion (son of the "jubilee's" Captain). From Whangarei they sailed for the Minerva Reef and Tonga. From Tonga they went to Niue and returned to Auckland via the Kermadeck Islands. There is no indication from the album that they found or discovered what had happened to the "Jubilee". Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).

Nathan, Simon, 1943-: Photographs of the Kermadec Islands, Antarctica, Inangahua, Mount...

Date: [ca 1964-2020]

By: Nathan, Simon, 1943-

Reference: ATL-Group-00516

Description: Collection of photographs taken by Simon Nathan between 1964 and 2020 on topics related to New Zealand. Includes images of geological fieldwork in some remote areas (including the Kermadec Islands and the Ross Dependency of Antarctica), and documentary images of geological events including the1968 Inangahua earthquake and 1974 Ngauruhoe eruption. Also includes a group portrait of delegates at the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research Photographers Conference, Nelson, 1972. The 35mm slides were digitised by Wellington Photographic Services. Descriptive text was supplied by Simon Nathan. Title supplied by Library. Some original slides were mislaid and only their electronic scan was delivered to the Library. Manuscript material donated by Simon Nathan is held at Library reference MS-Group-2054. Arrangement: All born digital photographs and digitised images were arranged by Simon Nathan into four groups according to topic or location, and delivered in four digital folders titled: 'SN West Coast', 'SN Antarctica', 'SN Kermadec Islands', and 'SN General images'. The digital files in each folder are identified by a prefix relating to the folder title: 'SNWC' 'SNANT', 'SNKE' and 'SNGE'. Each folder prefix is followed by a unique three digit running number. Where images on a closely related topic exist in a folder, these images are identified as a set by addition of an alphabetical suffix, for example SNWC-168a to SNWC-168g. The original slides have been annotated by Nathan with the file name for the matching digitised image. The original order of this arrangement has been preserved by the archivists where possible. All digital files and original slides have been organised by the archivists into four series to reflect the original digital folder groups. This collection comprises a selection made by Simon Nathan of his photographs which he has deemed appropriate for public use. The photographs were taken between 1964 and 2020 on a variety of cameras, however Simon Nathan intended all the photographs to be presented to the public as digital images. The original 35mm slide photographs have been included with the selection of digitised and born digital photographs as supplementary material. The images reflect his professional career as a geologist and his personal interests. Many photographs were taken on field trips around New Zealand and to Antarctica and the Kermadec Islands. Approximately half of the photographs were taken between 2004 and 2010 when he was contributing material to the Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand website.
