Name of celebrated paramount ariki of Mangaia, Cook Islands during the lead up to, and after, annexation by Britain/New Zealand. He was popularly called King John which had nothing to do with his Cook Island name. He inherited his position from his father, Numangatini, after the death of his older brother, Davida. In all fifteen islands were visited, eight of them being within the extended boundaries of New Zealand, and the remaining seven belonging to one or other of the adjacent groups - viz., Samoa, Tonga or Friendly Islands, and Fiji.
