The material consists of material collected by Keys from Maori sources, and a number of personal papers and diaries that relate to Keys' family life, and to his travels through the North Island on official business; he provides very detailed descriptions of the places that he goes to, the people that he encounters, and the Maori customs and social conditions that he experiences. Description: Photographs of the Japaneses capitulation in South East Asia and the Pacific, particularly Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. They include a number of photographs of Japanese prisoners of war being marched to camps; the signing of surrender documents by Australian officers; painting Japan Surrenders on the underside of RAAF plane wings to inform Japanese forces; the announcement of the Japanese surrender by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten in Singapore; the Duke of Gloucester, Governor General of Australia, visiting troops; a Japanese tank on fire; and earlier photographs of Allied forces on Bougainville in 1944. The photographs are nearly all official Royal New Zealand Air Force and are captioned on the reverse. Also included with the collection is a copy of New Zealand Freemason frm May 1977 which includes a photograph of the NZEF Masonic Association meeting in 1918 in France.. Description: A sketch of W H (William Herbert) Alington, dressed as a dragoman for a fancy-dress party. His jacket and Turkish-style pants are dark blue, his shirt white and his stockings, sash belt and turban red. He also wears a long white beard. The verso inscription 'By Aunt Maude' suggetsts that the work might be attributed to Hester Maud Alington; the watercolour is very similar to a sketch made on the verso of a painting of Castle Bellingham (A-446-021). However the initials CMA, bottom right of this watercolour, suggests that the artist might have been Charlotte Mabel Alington. A dragoman was an interpreter or guide in countries where Arabic, Turkish, or Persian is spoken. Description: Alexandra Pokrowsky born in Odessa near the Black Sea. Gives family background - father, Alexander Pavel, was a concert pianist - mother was a saleswoman. Recalls living with her mother in Berlin after parents divorced. Mentions the bombing in Berlin and her escape to Bavaria where she acted as an interpreter for the American Army at the end of the war. Talks about her arrival in New Zealand in 1950 and her four months at Pahiatua Refugee camp where she acted as nurse and interpreter and anything else she could do to help. Discusses her husband's career as a musician and their 1850's cottage in Thorndon which was built by the Randell family.
