Description: Journal of the voyage of the Armed Tender, HMS Chatham, captained by Lieutenant William Robert Broughton. HMS Chatham was one of the ships under the command of Captain Vancouver in his exploration of the Pacific and of the North American coast. Describes the voyage from England via Cape of Good Hope to Australia and New Zealand; activity at Dusky Sound, the discovery of the Chatham Islands, the voyage to Tahiti, with descriptions of the inhabitants, and of the Bounty mutineers. The voyage to Hawaii, with a description of the islands and their inhabitants, followed by the voyage to Canada and the Californian coast, before returning to Hawaii. Bell gives full accounts of the places and inhabitants visited. Description: Reminiscences of Commander Lennox-King of his time in Antarctica from 1956 to 1961; he describes the background to Antarctic exploration, his entry to Antarctic administration between the early IGY research period between 1951 and 1957 and later Scott Base research period from the mid-1960s. His reminiscences are divided into three parts, part one covering his first taste of Antarctica, the beginning of his time there as liaison officer to the seaborne element of the the United States' operation, Deep Freeze, experiences at the base and on the ice, the importance of transport connections, the wild life, travels to other parts of the continent and his return home. Part two covers his time as New Zealand commander of Scott Base in a time he calls the `Age of heroes', between the early days of Antarctic exploration and the matter-of-fact routine of today. Part three covers another appointment and Lennox-King describes relationships with the American base and the Russians in Antarctica. His term ended but he went on two voyages on the `Endeavour', the Antarctic resupply ship, sailing to the United States where the Namakargon was converted to become another `Endeavour' and then to the Antarctic and the sub-Antarctic islands. Description: Transcript of a memoir by Patricia Eyre, wife of New Zealand politician, Dean Eyre, of their family's wartime experience in San Francisco following the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Describes how she and her husband came to be in Hawaii in late 1941 before being evacuated to California in 1942, her search for war work, and her training as a welder working on Liberty ships at the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California. Recounts details of her shift work at the shipyard and of her experience in welding. Also includes informal accounts of her husband's activities with the National Party and of meetings with Peter Fraser and Gordon Coates. Attached are photocopies of her certificates in welding, union membership certificates for the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers, Iron Ship Builders and Helpers of America, pay receipts, war savings bond application, and United States War Department Notification of Personnel Action. Source of title - Transcribed Dean Eyre, who later became a National Party figure, was working for an American firm in Hawaii in 1941 at the time of the Pearl Harbour attack. Description: Prints collected by Terence Power McLean. Many images relate to All Blacks rugby games against France and Australia, but also unidentified All Blacks games, matches between provincial teams in New Zealand, training images, Eden Park crowds, and group and individual portraits of players and teams. The bulk of images were taken circa 1930s to 1960s, but some earlier content is included. Mainly taken by commercial and press photographers. Contains images of the 1968 French Tour of Australasia, including tests against All Blacks (Athletic Park, Wellington, 27 Jul and Eden Park, Auckland, 10 Aug), Waikato (Rugby Park, Hamilton, 6 Aug), Marlborough (Landsdowne Park, Blenheim, 3 Jul), and Australia. Also single prints of two games at Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir, Colmbes, Paris, against France during separate All Black tours (8 Feb 1964 and 25 Nov 1967). A series of seven prints show the large crowd at an unidentified Eden Park test match, with spectators in trees and rubbish after the match. International and provincial teams are also depicted training, with one early image taken on board a ship. Also contains one image identified as a Rugby League match between England and Australia [ca 1930s?]. Provincial games show [Auckland?] University verses Ponsonby, Manawatu verses Southland, Rugby Park, Invercargill (1939), North versus South [Islands?], Auckland versus Wellington, Waikato versus Canterbury, and an unidentified team with a pirate crest. Team portraits show Canterbury team (identified on the back of the print) and two unidentified teams. Individual portraits include John Lorraine Sullivan, various [Auckland?] players, and All Black [D Max?] of Nelson.
