Description: Memoir (two volumes) covers the period June 1844 to July 1848, during which the ship visited Madeira, Rio, the ports of Chile, Peru, Mexico and California, and the Sandwich and Society Islands. Narrative of 27 chapters provides indepth detail of navy life, as well as descriptions of ports visited and Markham's adventures with the crew. Memoir includes extensive illustrations, pen and ink sketches, ink and wash route-maps, harbour plans, hand-coloured flags and coats of arms, photographs and six letters tipped into the volumes. Memoir houses some original manuscript leaves inserted at appropriate points in the narrative. Sketches mostly drawn by Dr John Speer, the ship's Second Assistant Surgeon. Source of title - Transcribed from item Other Titles - Story of the commission of H.M.S. Collingwood from a midshipman's point of view Markham entered the Royal Navy aged 13 in 1844. He served fours years as a navy cadet onboard the HMS Collingwood under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir George Seymour on the Pacific station. Description: Volume records Lingard-Monk's voyage around the world with his second wife Ellen Heburn. The couple visited Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and North America during the documented period of 8 November 1894 and 11 May 1895. Vessels travelled on include the P&O SS 'Himalaya' from Tilbury to Sydney, 'Waihora' from Melbourne to Auckland, and the 'Arawa' from Auckland to Honolulu via Apia. The narrative details shipboard activities, the daily life on board ship, weather patterns, and the progress of the vessel in detail. Includes a preface, and annotated chapter headings and corrections in pencil. Places visited in New Zealand include Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua, Taupō, and Auckland. Laid in at the front of the volume are two certified copies of marriage registry entries for Lingard-Monk from his marriages to Diana Caroline Walpole on 18 April 1876 and Ellen Heburn on 23 October 1894, prepared by the General Register Office, London, 1981 and 1982.
