Description

Vera Jane Lamb (nee Barnes) born Dunedin, 1923, spent childhood at Crookston, near Heriot. Recalls father was employed with Tuapeka County Council. Mentions the Depression and describes how family made boot polish and soap. Recalls cold West Otago winters, travelling 8 miles by bus to school in Tapanui and punishment in school which was severe. Refers to frequent snowfalls and flooding. Briefly mentions contents of School Journals. Other memories include: first job as housemaid / receptionist for Tapanui doctor followed by spell as housemaid / waitress at Tapanui Hotel; marriage in Tapanui 1940 and first home as a married couple on Cross's farm, Greenfield, describing household amenities. Talks about involvement with Green Island Bowling club. Mentions Heather Knox, Zona Fleury, Dawn Rowley and Dorothy Bernard. Recalls obtaining position as school secretary at Green Island School in 1956, a position held for 30 years. Refers to headmaster, Mr E Hoare and ex headmaster, Mr Ian McLeod. Describes involvement with Country Women's Institute and input of CWI during the Abbotsford slip. Recalls night of the slip and mentions Mayor Vic Crimp. Describes in detail work of the Fireside Club and a brief reference to Hunterville hostel fire (1958).
