Houses, stores and industrial buildings are shown, along with shipping activity in the port. In the centre and right foreground are a park and a road, along which a couple is walking. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Walter Dalziel; brief history of the farm and family; marriage certificate for Christopher Dalziel and Mary Anne Wighton, 1866; photographs (see below). The original owner of the land at Tuapeka West (later known as Braewick farm) was Christopher Dalziel who bought 100 acres in 1874. In the 1890s a further 630 acres were acquired. In 2005 the property was owned by Walter Dalziel, with his son Hamish being actively involved in the farm. Awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Ann Gladys Smith was born in West Otago in 1905. Describes her childhood, family and moving from Glenkenich to Tapanui when she was five. Recalls schooling and attending Sunday School. Describes being housekeeper at the age of twelve, returning to high school, becoming a student teacher at the Glenkenich School and then going to Dunedin to work at the Nisbet Home for children in Andersons Bay. Talks about her decision to become a deaconess and training before going to St Andrew's Church in Hastings in 1932. Comments on the effect of the 1931 Napier earthquake on local people. Recalls her time at Auckland at St David's Church during World War II. Discusses the Emergency Precautions Services (EPS) for civilians in the event of a Japanese attack. Describes going to Inglenook Home for children in Gore in 1948 and then to Knox Church in Dunedin. Discusses her work as a deaconess particularly at Knox Church in Dunedin. Description: Elevated view looking down over the township of Port Chalmers and across the Otago Harbour to Quarantine Island, Goat Island (with single men's quarantine barracks visible) and beyond to the Otago Peninsula (Mt Charles on left and Harbour Cone on right). In the immediate foreground (on left) is the old cemetery. In the foreground there is a railway wagon and large stockpile of rocks waiting to be shifted. In foreground to the right is the cutting for the main Trunk Railway. Retail shops and commercial premises in George Street can be seen, including those of James Menelaus, James Bosworth Taylor (painter & paperhanger) & Simmonds & Sons. On the hill to the left in Grey Street is the Port Chalmers Grammar School and Holy Trinity Church (only partially visible). Photograph was taken by Herbert Deveril and dated ca 1876. The new Port Chalmers Grammar School in the foreground (centre right partially obscured by trees) was built 1874-1875 and occupied from December 1875. The building in George Street on extreme left was not completed until March 1875. Alongside this building is a large excavation for buildings eg Marine Hotel completed in 1881. Description: Mainly diaries and inward correspondence from her husband, relations and friends including Flora Acland, 1879-1885; Fanny Bagot, 1875-1876; her grandmother, F. A. Dicken, 1879; sister Ada Dicken, 1876-1899, Beatrice `Bebe' Knight, 1899, and Eleanor Inman, 1873-1899; Emma Packe, n.d.; her aunt Augusta Parker, 1875-1889; and Amelia Soder, 1885; referring to domestic events. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters.
