Country Women's Institutes of New Zealand, Dominion Federation of Country Women's Institutes (New Zealand), New Zealand Country Women's Institute, New Zealand Federation of Country Women's Institutes

Country Women's Institutes were established in 1921 at Rissington, Hawke's Bay by Miss A E Jerome Spencer, later honoured as the founder. The first federation, that of Hawke's Bay, was formed in 1925, followed by Auckland federation in 1927 and southern Wellington federation a year later. HQ in Kirkcaldie & Stains' building, Wellington (1936). (see An Encyclopaedia of NZ Vol 1, p 631). Was set up tp provide country women with support and education. It encouraged home crafts and cultural work such as music, drama, and arts and crafts; took an active part in rural events, such as A&P shows; provided community services, such as charitable donations, housekeeping for sick members and hospital visiting; and acted as a training ground for women in local body politics.

Description: Vera Jane Lamb (nee Barnes) born Dunedin, 1923, spent childhood at Crookston, near Heriot. Recalls father was employed with Tuapeka County Council. Mentions the Depression and describes how family made boot polish and soap. Recalls cold West Otago winters, travelling 8 miles by bus to school in Tapanui and punishment in school which was severe. Refers to frequent snowfalls and flooding. Briefly mentions contents of School Journals. Other memories include: first job as housemaid / receptionist for Tapanui doctor followed by spell as housemaid / waitress at Tapanui Hotel; marriage in Tapanui 1940 and first home as a married couple on Cross's farm, Greenfield, describing household amenities. Talks about involvement with Green Island Bowling club. Mentions Heather Knox, Zona Fleury, Dawn Rowley and Dorothy Bernard. Recalls obtaining position as school secretary at Green Island School in 1956, a position held for 30 years. Refers to headmaster, Mr E Hoare and ex headmaster, Mr Ian McLeod. Description: Colour transparencies of rose shows and floral art taken by James (Jim) Watt, 1979-1980. The 1980 NZ Rose Show in Tauranga is featured. Images from here include roses and the Federation of Country Women's Institute display. A 1979 rose show is also featured, possibly in Te Awamutu or Hamilton. Unidentified people appear in some photographs, sometimes preparing roses for display. The Te Awamutu Rose Gardens are photographed with the fountain designed by Fred Graham, which depicts landing birds, featured. Recalls a childhood of moving from place to place, living with relatives; schooling at Queen Victoria Maori Girls' School, Auckland and Epsom Grammar (Auckland) and Auckland Business College where she was top student. Mentions racial discrimination when seeking employment. Talks about: work experience in various positions; marriage to David Wikaira, a farmer, ca 1933; hard work on the farm which included ploughing with horses; sharemilking during Depression; social life and World War II and her efforts.
