View across water to a peninsula with a chapel with a tall spire on the ridge. Several Maori seated and standing in the foreground, most holding taiahas. There are also canoes in the water. Mount Tarawera is in the background. The associated mission station was that of Seymour Mills Spencer
'S F W' has been identified as S F Ward, a visitor to Tarawera with his mother in 1849
