Bambridge, William, 1819-1879

Educated at Norwich, chorister in Norwich Cathedral. Took up teaching, and in 1841 went with Bishop Selwyn to New Zealand in clerical capacity. Sailed from Sydney on the `Tomatin' arriving in the Bay of Islands on the 23rd June 1842. After 6 years he returned to England and became artist photographer to Queen Victoria. Painted miniatures and oils, and published pen portraits in lithographs. Married Sophia Thorrington, of Windsor, in 1841. Waimate missionary; father of William Samuel Bambridge (born 1842). Description: Severely water damaged MS originally prepared by Bambridge for Bishop Selwyn and set out to contain variant tramslations by William Williams, Robert Maunsell, James Hamlin, William Gilbert Puckey with a column for general remarks. The first part of the work contains only two completed columns that for Maunsell being in the script of either Maunsell or Bambridge, the other (in the Puckey column) being in the hand of William Williams with an alternative translation. This part enables comparison of variant translations of parts of the litany and the Prayers and Thanksgivings. The latter part of the manuscript is in the hand of William Williams and is in two columns containing his text for the proper lessons for the Sundays 'Ko nga inoi, nga tuhituhi me nga rongo pai hei korerotanga, a, taka no te tau' corresponding to pages 31-69 of the 1848 printed prayer book of which this appears to be an early draft about 1844. The text continues with William Williams's holograph draft text for the Communion service in two columns with prayers and the Confession. In the same folder is a further fragment containihg alternative corrigenda to the texts of the Psalter. The column headed for Maunsell is in Bambridge's hand and that headed for Puckey is in Archdeacon Williams's hand. The fragment contains texts for Psalms 3 to 9 only.. Quantity: 1 folder(s).

Description: Leaves 223-245 (pages 242-245 are fragmentary) corresponding to the visitation of the sick, section 19 of the 1848 Maori prayer book 'Ko te tikanga mo te karakiatanga i te turoro' signed 'Duplicate WmB' i.e. William Bambridge. With this is 'Ko te tangohanga a te turoro i te kotahitanga tapu' (Communion of the sick) and these correspond to pages 137-139 of the 1848 publication.
