In these four letters to her sister, Constance Smith, Louisa described her new home, the shortage of servants, the prospects for bringing up and educating children successfully in the colony, and social life in Christchurch.

Louisa George Rose and her husband, Conway Lucas Rose, arrived in Canterbury on the "Midlothian" on 8 Oct 1851. They came to the colony with the intention of staying ten years but left after only three years.
