Description: Mainly diaries and inward correspondence from her husband, relations and friends including Flora Acland, 1879-1885; Fanny Bagot, 1875-1876; her grandmother, F. A. Dicken, 1879; sister Ada Dicken, 1876-1899, Beatrice `Bebe' Knight, 1899, and Eleanor Inman, 1873-1899; Emma Packe, n.d.; her aunt Augusta Parker, 1875-1889; and Amelia Soder, 1885; referring to domestic events. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Description: The essay details the German origins of the Hessey family, lives of Nottinghamshire forebears of Joseph and Jane Hessey and family who immigrated to Australia in 1858 on the `Melbourne'. Jane died during the voyage and James married Caroline Stuart, a widow, in Melbourne in 1861. James and Caroline came onto Canterbury in 1862 and settled at Waikuku Creek near to James' daughter Mary and her husband John Ranby. Description: Four prize-wining essays from the 1994 and 1995 GRINZ competitions by Jennifer Pierson (on Charles Pierson), Vaudine Barnes (on Frances Clarke), Antonia Jones (on Elizabeth Pickering, nee Wooding); and Marjorie Harris (on George Edmonds) `Boom and bust; a businessman on the goldfields' by Jennifer Pierson. The story of American-born Charles Anson Crocker Herrick Philetous Pierson who arrived in New Zealand about 1860 and spent the rest of his life on the South Island goldfields as a cordial maker. In his forties he was forced to abandon his properties at Stafford and begin again in Kumara. `Elizabeth Wooding, 1854-1920' by Antonia Jones. The story of Elizabeth Wooding who came to Canterbury on the Zealandia in 1858 as an assisted immigrant with her parents and brother John. She married Richard Pickering at Kaiapoi in 1874. `Frances Clarke nee Stelfox, 1847-1924; raising a family in Russia and New Zealand' by Vaudine M Barnes. The story of Frances Clarke who arrived in New Zealand on the `Kaikoura' in 1886 accompanied by eight of her nine children; her family background, growing up in Northwich, marriage to engineer Thomas Plummer Clarke and move to Russia. Her life in the British community centred on Moscow, raising her family and moving from one textile town to another, migration to New Zealand, life in Onehunga, Auckland, the move to Waihi and later life. Includes photographs `The Labouring immigrant' by Marjorie Harris, the story of immigrant George Edmonds who arrived in New Zealand in 1863 on the `Brother's Pride' with his wife Martha Johnson. Description: Interview with Grace Ireland. Born 1909 in Methven. Bought up by grandparents William Morgan and Isobel Morgan (nee Johnston) on 'Westward Ho' farm which they bought in 1912. Recalls farming sheep and wheat. Describes farm house, chores, going to Methven primary school on horse and cart. Says they got electricity in 1920s and that her grandfather generated electricity. Talks about catching train at Ashburton to attend St Margaret's Girls College from 1923. Refers to dormitory and school friendships. Says grandparents shifted to house built by grandfather in Methven in 1921. Refers to grandfather being JP (Justice of the Peace) and church councillor and that Morgan street was named after him. Describes their house, nicknamed 'The Towers' and 'Morgan villa'. Says kept five cows on five acres. Talks about her involvement with Plunket Society, becoming Methven Plunket secretary at 18 years old. Says Plunket was based in Anglican Sunday school until Plunket Rooms were built, which has chair with her name on it. Recalls doing Sunday school teaching, sanctuary work and Girl Guides. Talks about going to Methven Picture theatre every saturday night in 1920s, and music and items before the film. Remembers dances and balls in Methven, details types of dances, banquets and bands. Mentions playing tennis and golf on Mount Harding farm before her husband Ray Ireland laid the new Methven golf course. Discusses war effort work of Methven Womens Institute sending food parcels to Britain during and post World War Two. Details parcel contents, writing letters and later visting woman in London. Recalls 1918 influenza epidemic. Talks about role of her grandmother as housekeeper of hospital based in Methven Hotel. Says had job post World War One in old post office. Discusses Methven shops and people who ran them. Refers to marrying Ray Ireland in 1935 after her grandfather died, and adopting their son Gerard. Talks about husband doing shearing and crutching, then working for Wright Stephenson as stock agent for 25 years.
