- Description
Diary with a partial transcript recording the travels of Canon Coats as an Anglican missionary with the Bishop in the Pacific Islands, Sep-Nov 1907. The diary commences on Friday 13 September 1907 as Coats' vessel leaves Norfolk Island heading to Vila, New Herbrides. The diary recounts his missionary activities including meeting parishioners, conducting religious services, attending funerals and baptisms. Coats often details the lives of the local people he meets, their rites, customs and social arrangements. Church matters are also discussed including some of the duties of the Bishop. From the diary it is unclear which vessel Coats is travelling on, but it would appear to be a steamer, and is skippered by Captain Hawkins.
The partial transcript of the diary covers the period 13 September to 15 October 1907. This material is accompanied by biographical information detailing Canon Coats' life.
