Description: Diary kept by H J Young from Nov 1887 to Nov 1889 mostly while on board HMS `Royalist' on a voyage he called `The Cruise of the Evolutionary Squadron'; he also kept a log of the ports called at, noting their arrival and departure with remarks on events in the ports. A personal equipment list is included and some financial records. The diary includes latitude and longitude, length of runs, songs, poems and puzzles which entertained the crews of these voyages, a list of Young's family's birth dates, notes such as addresses of various people and other material. The only recorded event is a battle commanded by Admiral Geoffrey T Phipps Hornby in the Solomon Islands in Jun 1889 which is described in some detail, particularly noting the various vessels involved. The remarks in the log record specific acts by the participants. The log begins with the `Royalist's arrival at Accra and its departure from Simon's Bay, South Africa (17 Nov 1887-5 Sep 1888) when they `Left for Our new Station Australia'; they arrived in Albany 11 Oct 1888 completing the assignment when they left for England 5 Nov 1889. Included in the remarks about the Australian assignment are comments on fighting taking place in various Pacific Islands, particularly the Solomons. Description: An account of the army service of Andrew Lysaght, father of Matt Lysaght Also an account of Matt and Linda Lysaght's trip with Andrew Lysaght to the Pacific in 1996 to view the sites of his active service. Illustrated with photographs. Andrew Lysaght served as a gunner in D Troop, 50th Battery 38 Field Regiment, 8 Brigade 2NZEF IP. He left New Zealand for Noumea, New Caledonia in June 1943 and was dispatched to Guadalcanal in September. He took part in the fighting to clear Mono Island of Japanese forces in October and was stationed on nearby Sterling Island until April 1944 when it was decided to disband 2NZEF IP.
