Description: Diary with a partial transcript recording the travels of Canon Coats as an Anglican missionary with the Bishop in the Pacific Islands, Sep-Nov 1907. The diary commences on Friday 13 September 1907 as Coats' vessel leaves Norfolk Island heading to Vila, New Herbrides. The diary recounts his missionary activities including meeting parishioners, conducting religious services, attending funerals and baptisms. Coats often details the lives of the local people he meets, their rites, customs and social arrangements. Church matters are also discussed including some of the duties of the Bishop. From the diary it is unclear which vessel Coats is travelling on, but it would appear to be a steamer, and is skippered by Captain Hawkins. The partial transcript of the diary covers the period 13 September to 15 October 1907. This material is accompanied by biographical information detailing Canon Coats' life. Source of title - Supplied by Library From 1902-1908 Robert Coats was a lay missionary for the diocese of Melanesia and organising secretary for the Melanesia Mission in the South Island of New Zealand. Description: Certificates are both of the same design but written out to two different names, Mr J Kingston and Mrs Kingston. They show a scene of a bay with a European sailing ship and a native canoe, with palms and banana palms at the far left. A cross bears the inscription "Thy kingdom come", and an inset shows a stylised bird flying with a fish in its mouth. At the top right is an inset showing the Southern Cross constellation, and the lower right inset shows a panel of Pacific decorative motifs. Description: Comprises the personal papers of John Richardson Selwyn, formerly Bishop of Melanesia and Warden of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and those of his parents, George Augustus and Sarah Harriet Selwyn. They include correspondence, diaries, reminiscences and other paper. As well there are some official Church records. Source of title - Supplied by Library Arrangement: A numbering system of the letters and documents, divided into rough series and using a reference SEL010/[series number]/[number of item] was used prior to the purchase of the papers. We have added these references to the titles where appropriate. However large numbers of the papers were never listed under this system. The papers have been placed into three series, according to their origin with George Augustus, Sarah Harriet and John Richardson Selwyn.
