Caricature of Dr Daniel Solander; one of a series by Darly ridiculing macaronis or dandies - see Library of Congress. Quarterly Journal, Summer 1982, p.138. See also A-038-021 and A-038-022
The term Macaroni derived from the Macaroni Club, to which the most dressy travelled gentlement-about-town belonged, and applied generally to any fop or dandy. The companion to this print, "The fly-catching macaroni" is a portrait of Sir Joseph Banks. The verses accompanying the engravings allude to the visit made by Banks and Solander to the Arctic circle.
