Description: The top image, from an original made in 1778 by John Webber, shows three sailors in a rowing boat in the right foreground aiming rifles at the group of walruses in the left foreground. There are icy hills in the background. The lower image, from an image possibly originally drawn by J Woodcock, shows a view in Coal Harbour in Cook's River, in British Columbia, with a three-masted sailing ship in the left foreground, and partially wooded hills in the background. A image similar to this was published in Portlock, Nathaniel. A voyage round the world; but more particularly to the north-west coast of America: performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon. He describes Arctic weather, plants and animals, and the Eskimos' dress, eating habits and manners; also winter trips along the coast and adventures on voyage south. Daily entries on whaling cruise to the Arctic in the "Francis Palmer", Jan-Nov 1887, when only two whales were caught, and similar entries for a cruise in the "Rosario", Mar-Nov 1888. Description: Caricature of Sir Joseph Banks as a lepidopterist and macaroni (dandy), pursuing a butterfly with two bats in his hands. He has both feet planted on two separate globes, on the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, a reference to his travels to the Arctic and previously to the Southern Hemisphere with Captain Cook Edges trimmed Other Titles - Butterfly Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left, outside plate-mark: in pencil, 4695, Sir Josh Banks [number] 20. 30/- [shillings] The term Macaroni derived from the Macaroni Club, to which the most dressy travelled gentlement-about-town belonged, and applied generally to any fop or dandy. The companion to this print, "The simpling macaroni" is a portrait of Daniel Solander. The verses accompanying the engravings allude to the visit made by Banks and Solander to the Arctic circle.
