Caricature of Sir Joseph Banks as a lepidopterist and macaroni (dandy), pursuing a butterfly with two bats in his hands. He has both feet planted on two separate globes, on the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, a reference to his travels to the Arctic and previously to the Southern Hemisphere with Captain Cook
The term Macaroni derived from the Macaroni Club, to which the most dressy travelled gentlement-about-town belonged, and applied generally to any fop or dandy. The companion to this print, "The simpling macaroni" is a portrait of Daniel Solander. The verses accompanying the engravings allude to the visit made by Banks and Solander to the Arctic circle.
