Description: Caricature of Sir Joseph Banks as a lepidopterist and macaroni (dandy), pursuing a butterfly with two bats in his hands. He has both feet planted on two separate globes, on the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, a reference to his travels to the Arctic and previously to the Southern Hemisphere with Captain Cook Edges trimmed Other Titles - Butterfly Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left, outside plate-mark: in pencil, 4695, Sir Josh Banks [number] 20. 30/- [shillings] The term Macaroni derived from the Macaroni Club, to which the most dressy travelled gentlement-about-town belonged, and applied generally to any fop or dandy. The companion to this print, "The simpling macaroni" is a portrait of Daniel Solander. The verses accompanying the engravings allude to the visit made by Banks and Solander to the Arctic circle.
