View across a promontory, with the steeple of a church and low houses. In the background is are the volcanic cones of Mount Tarawera. A cultivated garden lies to the left of the church. In the foreground are groups of Maori, and there are two waka on the lake.
Probably orginally from a drawing or lithograph by William Bambridge - there is a copy of this lithograph in the British Library. On the left is an inscription 'from a sketch by S. F. W', possibly S. F. Ward.
The church shown was on Kariri (Galilee) Point at Lake Tarawera. It was established by Rev Seymour Mills Spencer in 1843. Spencer moved to nearby Te Wairoa in 1852.
