- Description
Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1900s.
All the views are taken in the South Island, travelling by horse and carriage to Takaka and the Waikoropupu Springs, the Motupipi limestone caves; Sumner and Cave Rock, and New Brighton; the Ashburton Domain.
Several scenes show aspects of life at Longbeach sheep station, including the manager's house; the Longbeach Homestead seen across a lake; men at work at 7.00am with horses and dogs in the farmyard, with a windmill visible; and a watermill.
From there the journey goes via Hawarden, Culverden, the Waiau River, Mason River, Conway River and Conway Hills, Charwell River, the Kowhai River, and then several images show the travellers having to negotiate a washout on the road at Wandle Creek. (The photograph on page 1071 has the footnote `Wandle Creek wash out. A `ticklish' drive).
The last views show the Hapuku River, Kaikoura and the Kaikoura Wharf, and the Kaikoura Ranges.
