Description: 46 images of the Duke of Gloucester's tour of New Zealand in 1934-5 including: nine of his visit to Rotorua including Maori kapa haka; one of veterans at the bridge of remembrance in Christchurch; one of him opening Tekapo bridge and another of the party at Tekapo House hotel; one of him in a crowd outside the railway station in Hokitika; one of him inspecting a parade of nurses; one of him visiting a traditional whare; two of him as a jockey at a race meeting; three of the felling of a kauri tree; seven of his stay at Longbeach sheep station, Ashburton County; and two of him at the Waitangi memorial. Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Each slide mount is annotated with the name or brief description, and/or the location, of the house. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Title transcribed from item. Many slides are not dated. Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in a 6-row, 50 slides per row, plastic case labelled 'South Island Houses'. The arrangement was by location of house, approximately from North to South, from back to front then from left to right. Quantity: 24 colour original transparency/ies. Physical Description: Colour transparencies in plastic and cardboard slide mounts. Processing information: Slides have been removed from container and put into archival pockets, following the original order, from left to right and top to bottom.

Description: Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1900s. All the views are taken in the South Island, travelling by horse and carriage to Takaka and the Waikoropupu Springs, the Motupipi limestone caves; Sumner and Cave Rock, and New Brighton; the Ashburton Domain. Several scenes show aspects of life at Longbeach sheep station, including the manager's house; the Longbeach Homestead seen across a lake; men at work at 7.00am with horses and dogs in the farmyard, with a windmill visible; and a watermill. From there the journey goes via Hawarden, Culverden, the Waiau River, Mason River, Conway River and Conway Hills, Charwell River, the Kowhai River, and then several images show the travellers having to negotiate a washout on the road at Wandle Creek. (The photograph on page 1071 has the footnote `Wandle Creek wash out. A `ticklish' drive). The last views show the Hapuku River, Kaikoura and the Kaikoura Wharf, and the Kaikoura Ranges.
