Barltrop, George William, 1863-1946

Born at Brightwater, Nelson; educated at Nelson College, where he was retained as an assistant master. From there he joined the staff of the Government Life Insurance Department in Wellington where he remained until he became deputy-commissioner. Very involved with St Mark's Church, and one of the founders of the St Mark's day school for small children. (See photograph album "St Mark's Parish, PA1-o-453, p 31). President of the Nelson Camera Club at one time, and very involved with the Wellington Branch of the Missions to Seamen.

Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: Photogprahs of New Zealand circa 1890s to 1900s, probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first sequence includes scenes around Auckland harbour, including Rangitoto Onehunga, with one view of passengers on board the ferry `SS Takapuna'. One photograph shows a group of young Maori standing on the bank of the Whanganui River (four young men under an umbrella). Wellington area views of Pahautanui (Pauatahanui), Horokiwi, Lyall Bay and the Wellington Heads. On page 873 (the album pages run from 856 to 895), there is a postcard with heads of George William Barltrop and his wife Emma Jane Barltrop, with a collage of images relating to the Missions to Seamen. Slipped beneath the postcard is the death notice for Emma Jane Barltrop (died 24 September 1954). There are views of the Rimutakas from the railway line; a flock of sheep being herded along a road in palmerston North; three people standing outside a wooden bungalow in Palmerston North; and there is a view of another house in Feilding. Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, between 1900 and 1905. The images follow on from McIntosh album 15, (these are pages 815-835) starting at Opunake (a church building). Pihama (a memorial to members of the crew of the barque Lizzie Bell which was wrecked off Oeo, 24th July 1901), a view of the Oeo Hotel (F. Morgan, proprietor), and a view of the mast of the Lizzie Bell standing as a memorial at Pihama. These are followed by a panorama of Parihaka (p. 822-823), and a portrait of a man named Ruru, at Parihaka. The rest of the album has scenes in the Auckland area, including a view of Queen Street in which the chemist shop of Charles J Ratgen is clearly visible. A series of images show various Maori artifacts on display at the Auckland Museum. Scenery in Auckland includes the Auckland Domain, Epsom, Tamaki, Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto, St Heliers, Mount Hobson and Mount Eden. Two church buildings are seen, one at Opunake, and the remains of a stone church at Tamaki. A group of photographs show horse-drawn carriages decorated with flowers for a floral fete (p 835-838). Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Album of South Island scenes (except for a few taken en route to Wellington showing The Brothers, Pencarrow Head, and one of a group having a picnic at Muritai). Probably mostly photographed by George William Barltrop. The first section shows the Nelson and Marlborough areas, and several photographs of ships at sea, one shipwreck (the Antiocco Accame in 1901), and one aground (the Elginshire, 1902). People who are identified are: the Reverend Bennett (Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with his first wife Hana Te Unuhi Mere Bennett, and young daughter, Rawinia Bennett (circa 1900); Abe Wells, photographed as an older man outside his cob house at Richmond (circa 1890s); and Isla Reid, photographed as a young girl, probably in the Dunedin area. Three scenes in cemeteries have clearly identified headstones, and include those for the Reverend Samuel Poole, Frank Churchill Simmons; and a group memorial for Charlotte McDonald, Annie McQuaid and Lizzie Crinrod, stewardesses who were drowned in the wreck of the SS Wairarapa, Great Barrier Island, 29th October 1894. Description: Photographs, probably taken by G W Barltrop. Scenes in the first part of the album are of the South Island, mostly around the Dunedin area, and further south, in Invercargill and Bluff. There are two panoramas, one of Port Chalmers and one of Lumsden. Most are landscapes, but a few show groups of people, including five young girls in the Dunedin Botanical Gardens, and a man driving a horse and buggy at Manuka Creek, with two young women sitting beside him, and a third woman standing by the horse's head. A graveyard scene is a close-up view of two headstones, one for Catherine Louisa Schaw (widow of John S Schaw), who died in 1874 aged 71. North Island scenes show a church at Levin; and views of the countryside, a bullock pulling a laden cart, and at the Rimutaka Summit all taken on a train journey. Group portraits include one of a large family group, with two young boys in the foreground with a cricket bat and cricket pads; and two large groups of men and women associated with the Missions to Seamen. One image show a plaque erected `In memory of twelve officers and seamen who were drowned or died from exposure, by the wreck of the Barque Lizzie Bell near the Oeo River, July 24 1901, erected by members and friends of the Missions to seamen, Wellington, New Zealand'. They include scenes in the South Island in the Otago area, around Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, the Arrow River, Shotover River, Lake Hayes and the Remarkables. One sequence shows the barque `Gladys' at Queen's Wharf (?), Wellington, probably in February 1903, with major damage to masts and sails, and a group portrait of sailors, presumably from the `Gladys'. One group portrait shows Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with another Maori clergyman, and two European clergymen; a second image shows three different Maori clergymen. Description: Photograph album presented to George William Barltrop by Herbert Spackman of Rintoul Street, Wellington. Includes a letter attached inside the front cover which reads in part "Dear Mr Barltrop, Please accept the accompanying photo album as a small acknowledgement of the very valuable help you have so very generously afforded me in my early struggles in amateur photography...". Photographs are all of the Wellington area, and were probably taken by George William Barltrop. The first group of images show the process of inserting a middle section, thus enlarging St Thomas's Anglican Church in Newtown. Several views of Taita are followed by a group portrait of a man and two boys seated in a garden, wearing church vestments; and a woman also seated in a garden reading a book. The following sequence is chiefly related to The Wellington branch of The Missions to Seamen, and include two views of a cemetery in which a close view of a headstone commemorates the loss of Andrew Hughson (drowned aged 27, when lost overboard from the SS Takapuna in May 1899), and Captain Brewer, the officers and crew of the SS Ohau which foundered in the same storm. There is a photographic image of a receipt from the Missions to Seamen, Wellington, for 12 pounds, received from "Members of the City Police"; and a number of group portraits of Missions to Seamen picnics, the group in each case carrying the Missions banner. c Two views show steamships in Wellington harbour, and one is of a group of soldiers on the wharf in Wellington, prearing to embark for the South African War, with members of the public watching the parade. All the views are taken in the South Island, travelling by horse and carriage to Takaka and the Waikoropupu Springs, the Motupipi limestone caves; Sumner and Cave Rock, and New Brighton; the Ashburton Domain. Several scenes show aspects of life at Longbeach sheep station, including the manager's house; the Longbeach Homestead seen across a lake; men at work at 7.00am with horses and dogs in the farmyard, with a windmill visible; and a watermill. From there the journey goes via Hawarden, Culverden, the Waiau River, Mason River, Conway River and Conway Hills, Charwell River, the Kowhai River, and then several images show the travellers having to negotiate a washout on the road at Wandle Creek.
