Comprises the personal papers of John Richardson Selwyn, formerly Bishop of Melanesia and Warden of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and those of his parents, George Augustus and Sarah Harriet Selwyn. They include correspondence, diaries, reminiscences and other paper. As well there are some official Church records.

Arrangement: A numbering system of the letters and documents, divided into rough series and using a reference SEL010/[series number]/[number of item] was used prior to the purchase of the papers. We have added these references to the titles where appropriate. However large numbers of the papers were never listed under this system.
The papers have been placed into three series, according to their origin with George Augustus, Sarah Harriet and John Richardson Selwyn. Many of the folders have been described to piece-level

Description: Written from Norfolk Island and `at sea', the letters describe life on Norfolk Island and travels among the islands; many of the letters are lengthy and are almost in the form of a diary; they give a vivid picture of missionary life and politics in the Solomon and Vanuatu islands and his opinions on Church government. Description: Handwritten account, titled 'Journey to India'. Covers only the the journey from Corfu through Greece to Constantinople. Comprises 5 unbound booklets, numbered 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9. 'The last' is pencilled on the 9th booklet. Location of the missing booklets is unknown, as is the identity of the writer. Internal evidence shows that the writer is classically educated, is interested in Turkish and Greek law, and refers to 'Sasa', who may be Sarah Selwyn (nee Richardson). Possibly the writer is the judge, John Richardson, father of Sarah Quantity: 1 volume(s) 5 items.

The original partial list lists them as SEL010/5.00 - Miscellaneous material relating in some way to G A Selwyn. One of the items has not been located, while there is a substantial collection of papers relating to blackbirding, which have been placed in a seperate folder Quantity: 1 folder(s).
