Letter and journal page by missionaries in Tahiti

Description: An autographed letter by a missionary (the signature excised), to the Reverend Joseph Moore, giving a lengthy account of his safe arrival in Tahiti, where he was greeted by Queen Pomare and her mother. He comments on the dispirited appearance of the people and gives details of his living conditions. A leaf of journal entries in a different hand, from 20 April to 8 June (no year given), about the attack on Papeete by a steamer and frigate in which `16 French and 3 officers are killed and a very large number of Tahitians.' reported to be 500, with details of further fighting and casualties, of negotiations between the French and the Queen, and of other alarms. The undated memorandum evidently relates to the fighting attendant on the forcible annexation of Tahiti by the French, which began with a landing of troops under Abel Dupetit-Thomas in 1842 and continued sprodically until the restoration of Queen Pomare IV in 1846. Description: The papers of Cranleigh Barton relate to his life and work as a watercolour artist living in Clifton, New Zealand. Scrapbooks contain travel souvenirs, sketches and clippings collected during his life and travels. Correspondence and diaries also comprise a large proportion of the collection; in particular, his diaries are extensive, documenting the years 1913-1974 and his various travels to Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America, the Pacific, Asia and Canada. Within Cranleigh Barton's papers are personal papers of his forebears, Reverend Richard Taylor and his daughters, Mary C Medley, Bertha Taylor and Laura Harper. Items include correspondence and journals kept by Taylor on his arrival to New Zealand as a missionary in 1830, and cover observations on native flora, fauna, people and customs. Material belonging to his daughters mostly comprises personal diaries and scrapbooks. Mary Medley was a most prodigious diarist, and the collection contains volumes spanning 1849 to 1921. Audio recordings in the collection include readings from Reverend Taylor's diaries and recordings from the Reverend Richard Taylor memorial lectures. Description: Comprises the personal papers of John Richardson Selwyn, formerly Bishop of Melanesia and Warden of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and those of his parents, George Augustus and Sarah Harriet Selwyn. They include correspondence, diaries, reminiscences and other paper. As well there are some official Church records. Source of title - Supplied by Library Arrangement: A numbering system of the letters and documents, divided into rough series and using a reference SEL010/[series number]/[number of item] was used prior to the purchase of the papers. We have added these references to the titles where appropriate. However large numbers of the papers were never listed under this system. Description: Consists of 74 letters, sent between 1824 and 1863, by missionaries and pioneers in New Zealand. Letters include references relating to the Mission and church matters, land sales and disputes, voyages from England to New Zealand, the import and export of goods, and early colonial life. Notable historical names included in the collection include William Wakefield, Charles Hursthouse, and George Swainson. Folders also contain supporting research documentation, including correspondence, book chapters and in some cases, a transcript of individual letters. Also included in each folder is extensive detail about the postal stamps, information about when the letters were sent and received, and the names of the ships that carried the letters internationally. When item includes transcript, this has been noted in the description. Title supplied by Library. Individual letter descriptions taken from auction house lot descriptions. Arrangement: Letters were delivered to the Library in Spinks auction house folders, identified with a lot number. In most cases, the letters were arranged in date order. Each letter was mounted on to card, noting the writer and the date, as well as information about the post marks and stamps. Some folders have included relevant research documentation, including correspondence, book chapters, and transcriptions. Quantity: 10 folder(s) containing 74 letters. Provenance: Letters were collected by Margaret Frankcom for their contributions to postal stamp history, and the transcriptions, original housing, and accompanying documents were likely created and compiled by her. The collection was then sold through Spink & Sons auction house on her behalf. Processing information: Letters have been removed from Spinks auction house folders and placed into acid-free folders for storage reasons. Auction house folders have been disposed of by Library. Letters have been unmounted and laid flat for preservation reasons, with accompanying research material and transcripts placed behind the corresponding letter in each folder. Original order has been partially maintained as imposed by the auction house lot numbers, except where noted.
