Shipboard diary by Richard Pheney

Description: Loose leaf shipboard diary by Richard Pheney written during a voyage from Gravesend to New Plymouth on the 'Eden' in 1850, and subsequent voyages between New Zealand settlements. The diary is written in letter form, addressed to "Richard", with the first entry dated "Bay of Biscay, 20th June 1850". Some of the stations along the journey described include arrival at Isle of Wright on 11 June 1850, and off Madeira on 28 June 1850. The voyage ends at New Plymouth on 28 October 1850 - 140 days after departure from Gravesend. The diary then describes New Plymouth and another voyage from there to Nelson departing on 6 November 1850, and a voyage from Nelson to Port Nicholson departing on 25 November 1850 and arriving on 30 November 1850. The final sections of the diary describe Wellington, New Plymouth, and suggested articles for import and resale, and are dated "Wellington Decb. 3rd, 1850", "Wellington Dec. 6, 1850", with the latter addressed as "My dear Richard & Frank", and "New Plymouth 6 January 1851". Description: Loose leaf shipboard diary by Frances Pople Pheney written on board the 'Dallam Tower' during a voyage to Otago in 1878-1879. The manuscript is headed "Diary written on board the Dallam Tower bound for Otago" and the first entry dated "1st November". Subsequent entries are dated 3 November, 4 November, 5 November, 6 November, 7 November, 16 November, 18 November, 19 November, 20 November, 21 November, 25 November, 2 December, 16 December, 18 December, and 30 December 1878, and 7 January, 11 January, 12 January, 13 January, 15 January, and 19 January 1879. Includes description of 21st birthday on board the ship, and the arrival in Dunedin took place on 15 January 1879. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
