Description

Papers relating to Eric Tyndale-Biscoe and Phyllis Mary Long. Includes:

Letters from Eric Tyndale-Biscoe to his parents describing his work and life in New Zealand, dated from 1925-1926. Often addresses his parents as "Dear old birds". Includes extensive accounts of holidays, friends, and work as a master at Wanganui Collegiate School. Also two letters to future wife Phyllis Long, including letter containing a proposal of marriage.

Correspondence from Long to her parents in England, 1923-1925. Letters relate her voyage to New Zealand via the Panama Canal, life working at Nga Tawa School, and holidays taken (including mountaineering and hiking in the Central Plateau). Also contains letters to Doreen Ross of Waitomo, mainly from Srinagar (Kashmir) dated from 1927-1935 regarding life in Kashmir as well as England with husband Tyndale-Biscoe and their children Hugh and Ann.

Long's journals (illustrated with photographs and drawings) of two horse riding and camping tours made with Sylvia Lysaght through Taranaki and Waikato regions (23 Jan-9 Feb 1925) and from Wanganui to Taupo and back again (30 Dec 1925-26 Jan 1926). Also diary of voyage from New Zealand to England (3 Sep-29 Oct 1926) and the ship 'Marama'.

Diary of horseback riding and camping tour through Taranaki and Waikato Regions

Description: Account of riding holiday taken by Phyllis Long and Sylvia Lysaght on horses Ngaio and Ladybird. Describes route from Punarima via Mokoia, Hawera, Ngaere, Stratford, Te Whera, Pohukura, Whangamomona, Ohura, to near Aria. Then by car to Te Kuiti and on to Waitomo Caves. Return journey by foot to Te Kuiti and back to Aria by car. Route on horseback continues with the two women travelling down the Awakino River to the sea and then back to Punarima via Tongaporutu, White Cliffs, Urenui, and New Plymouth. Account describes the people they meet and places they stayed along the way. Camping spots, bush, the condition of the horses (including Ngaio almost drowning), rats, mosquitos, bathing, and food (including picnics). Also description of Waitomo Caves. People of note include: Mr Henry and Mrs Ida Barwick (of near Te Wera): the Good family (also of near Te Wera) who rode through the Tangarakai Gorge with them; and the Ritchie family (including Thomas, Mary, and John) of Aria, formerly of the Chatham Islands, where they left their horses when they travelled on to Waitomo. Description: Account of riding tour taken by Phyllis Long and Sylvia Lysaght on horses Ngaio and Ladybird. Describes route from Wanganui to Kakatahi, Karioi, Waiouru, and Desert Road, to camp on Lake Taupo and later near Tokaanu, and trip back again via Waiouru, Ohakune, and Raetihi. Also includes accounts of staying with farmer Mr Watt near Wanganui and with two Maori families (including that of Mr Ham) between Turangi and Waiouru, meeting up and camping with fellow teachers at Nga Tawa (Else and Herve) and Eric Tyndale-Biscoe, Mr Cooper, Rev Hugh Austin, [and Mr Darcy?] who joined the party. Describes the terrain, condition of the horses, getting lost, a visit to Wairekei and the geothermal sights there, and sleeping out in the open. Also contains part of legal document relating to Maori land taken by Long from an "old Maori church, very much fallen to pieces". Titled "Te Ture Kooti Whenua Maori, 1894". Regards Kotohiko Kiriwehi [or Waitana, crossed out on document] of Hiruharama (Whanganui) who died on 12 December 1890 and had land at Whakaihuwaka and Pipiriki. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Contains outward correspondence from Phyllis Long to her friend Doreen Ross of Waitomo. Long writes from England and Srinagar in Kashmir about her life. Includes descriptions of teaching and schools in both England and India, Long's engagement to Eric Tyndale-Biscoe, wedding, and birth of their son Hugh (and raising him by Truby King's method) and daughter Ann. Description of Kashmir include where they live; having servants; lakeside and houseboat holidays as well as skiing, hiking, and horse riding trips in the mountains; the family donkey and teaching the children to ride; riots by the Muslim population; and still and film photography. Long also reacts to the news from New Zealand including the health of friends, slump in wool prices, and construction of Tongariro Chateau at Mount Ruapehu "it sounds to us the place must be entirely ruined with this new hotel". Also describes returning to England to live with her parents in Cambridge and travelling around the United Kingdom with Tyndale-Biscoe as he gives talks about Kashmir. Also contains an official bulk letter from Tyndale-Biscoe in his position at the CMS Schools relating news that Hindu widows may now be remarried, the 1928 flood in Srinagar, and the religious riots. Description: Contains outward correspondence relating to Eric Tyndale-Biscoe's time as a master at Wanganui Collegiate School and travels in New Zealand. Work life at Wanganui Collegiate features. Tyndale-Biscoe describes school politics, colleagues, headmaster Rev C F Pierce (particularly the effect of a stroke on his performance at work), problems with prefects, bullying of new boys (including on school picnic), school trips (to the beach with boarders, to freezing works with agriculture class, and to Maori Pageant at Opera House), punishment of a boy caught smoking, rugby (match against Te Aute College), cricket, school dances, performance of 'Box and Cox' play at Harvey House (including annotated programme). Relates talks he has given about Kashmir (with lantern slides) in Wanganui, at Nga Tawa School, and in Christchurch as well donations of money at these talks (and politics surrounding this). Includes a printed program for "East & West Missionary Exhibition" at Drill Hall. Other topics include family matters, events in Kashmir and Britain, and education philosophy. Also discusses Nga Tawa headmistress Frances McCall and female teachers at Nga Tawa and social events (including beach visit and attendant scandal); Phyllis Long (later Tyndale-Biscoe's wife) is mentioned a number of times. Numerous mentions are made of Mr Frank McGrath his wife Elizabeth (including her mental breakdown), and Hugh and Vera Austin. Other names noted include D K Leather, George Harris, Marjorie Dalrymple, and Miss Downing. Describes holidays taken around the North Island in the school holidays. Also relates preparation for an automobile tour (buying a car and fitting it with a caravan) as well as planning for job chaperoning Mrs Williams' son Bruce around Europe. Tyndale-Biscoe's correspondence also relates New Zealanders' impressions of missionaries, a trip to see the Don Cossack Choir, a woodchopping event, flooding in Wanganui on 26 July 1926, and a description of the Bishop of Wellington. Also includes a letter from Vera Austin to Mrs Blanche Tyndale-Biscoe thanking her for "Xmas toys" sent for her children, a letter from Mr Austin to Mr Cecil Tydale-Biscoe and another from Frank McGrath describing the esteem in which his son is held, and a holograph copy of Pierce's letter of commendation for Tyndale-Biscoe upon his departure from New Zealand. Description: Contains outward correspondence from Eric Tyndale-Biscoe to his parents Cecil Earle and Blanche Violet Tyndale-Biscoe. Also includes one letter to "Fluffs" [sister?]. Letters describe Tyndale-Biscoe's voyage to New Zealand on the ship 'Ionic', his first impressions of New Zealand travelling from Wellington to Hawke's Bay by rail, working at Wanganui Collegiate (including events such as dances), mountaineering in the Central Plateau, holidaying in Tokaanu, and riding a motorcycle around the Central Plateau area (including road conditions). He also refers to family matters, including his father's work in Kashmir, and the fact he misses Kashmir. A number of letters are written on "Harvey House, Collegiate School" letterhead.
