Description: Memoirs written by Spence about 1939 beginning with a description of his family and life on the Orkney Isles, going to school followed by his working life there; he writes of his decision to go to New Zealand and his arrival in 1888 on SS Ionic. He describes his decision to become a Presbyterian minister and the various stages this entailed before he was ordained in 1902. Following appointments in New Zealand he went to Australia where he remained. The Spence family did revisit New Zealand frequently and describe their holidays in many parts of the country including Rotorua, Auckland, Napier, Dunedin, Christchurch, Woodville and Wellington. The memoirs are accompanied by an abstract compiled by Spence's grand-niece, Heather Jones. Description: Shipboard diary of John Springall describing a voyage from England to New Zealand aboard the White Star Clipper Ship 'Mermaid', from July to October 1859, and continued after his arrival, with additional information relating to his farming on Great Barrier Island added up to the year 1881. The 'Mermaid' left the Liverpool docks on 11 July 1859, arriving in Auckland Harbour on 18 October 1859. Springall travelled with his wife Emily (Milly), nee Kent, and their eldest child Sidney (Sydney) Swires (Swines) Springall. The account describes sailing conditions, welfare and activities of passengers. The volume also includes poetry relating to the voyage. At the back of the journal is a log of the 'Mermaid' recording nautical data relating to the progress of the voyage. There are also three appendices which comprise two testimonials and an article on the pastimes of passengers aboard the vessel: - "Testimonial presented to Captain James White of the White Star Clipper Ship Mermaid - Auckland Harbour October 1859" - "Testimonial Mr James Joseph McQuade Purser of the Ship 'Mermaid'" - "Poem recited at a Concert in the Steerage Aug 2 1859" - "Pastimes on board the good Ship 'Mermaid' during her voyage from Liverpool, to Auckland in the Summer of 1859. by T Aickin Esqr MD", dated 5 August 1859. Dr Thomas Leland Aickin established himself as a medical practitioner in Avondale, Auckland, and was appointed second superintendent of the Auckland Asylum. The journal continues after the voyage to New Zealand recording Springall's travels through the Waitakere Ranges and his later life as a farmer and cow breeder at Blind Bay on Great Barrier Island. The back of the journal also contains a catalogue of the cows and calves owned by Springall. Last dated entry 23 March 1881. Description: Two albums of black and white photograph prints depicting people and scenery around New Zealand, taken 1938 and 1948 by Margaret Petyt, England. Album 1 includes photographs taken during a one year teaching exchange to Fendalton School, Christchurch and includes tramping and skiing trips with friends. This trip included a walking group of over 1300 people for the "Railway Mystery Trip" in 1938. New Zealand landscapes and walking feature heavily and the album also shows Margaret and friends fishing and deer stalking. Album 2 was compiled from a trip to New Zealand via Sydney, of friends or family that she visited as well as scenery and her activities around New Zealand. Includes her bus getting stuck on the way to Mount Cook and a train crash outside Otaki. Margaret revisits many of the locations that she documented in her first trip around New Zealand ten years earlier. Photographs have been annotated throughout both albums with a biographical, geographical or comment of interest by Margaret. Some photographs of individuals and families have been identified including the Brown, Cook and Pollard families in album one. Album two has photographs of the Law, Pollard, Clist, Cumberland and the Macpherson family. Margaret Petyt was a teacher from England on a one year exchange to Fendalton High School. Description: One photograph album compiled and taken by Margaret Petyt containing black and white photographic prints recording the trip that she made around New Zealand in 1938. Photographs predominantly consist of New Zealand landscapes and tourist destinations: the Bay of Islands, Whangarei Falls and Wairua Falls, Matapouri Bay, Te Anau and Mount Ruapehu. Includes aerial views of Franz Josef Glacier taken during an aeroplane trip with Captain Mercer, and images taken of Fox Glacier showing Margaret Petyt with friends in an ice cave. Also includes botanical images of tree ferns and lancewood taken on a trip to Stewart Island. Images taken at Rotorua show: mudpools, geysers, Māori villages and buildings which include whare whakairo and pātaka in Whakarewarewa and Ohinemutu. Description: A letterbook of personal correspondence from surveyor Alma Royalton-Kisch to her elderly grandmother "Gargie". The letterbook comprises carbon copy typescript pages of letters sent by Royalton-Kisch home to England during her journey. Royalton-Kisch notes in one of her letters that the letters take the form of a diary. Royalton-Kisch travelled first class on the 'Orion' from Tilbury in London to Australia and New Zealand and back, in 1950. This is a very detailed account of Royalton-Kisch's experiences and observations of life aboard the 'Orion', and of life in Australia and New Zealand. Of interest are her observations of the English class system and colonial life in the antipodes. Includes a handwritten note on the front cover written by Royalton-Kisch to "Caroline" explaining that she may wish to read it in future years, but it was written primarily for her grandmother. Description: Holograph manuscript volume recording the travels of Llewellyn in the United States of America and New Zealand in the form of draft letters to his family. Journal begins with Llewellyn's departure on 'The Java' from Liverpool on 19 August 1871. Journey continues to Cork and Queenstown [Cobh] in Ireland, before crossing the Atlantic to New York. In the United States visits are made up the Hudson River to West Point, and to Albany by railway, and on to Niagara Falls, Toronto, Chicago, and Salt Lake City, before finally departing for New Zealand from San Francisco on 13 September 1871. Voyage on the SS 'Moses Taylor' to Honolulu and then on the SS 'Nevada' to Auckland. Most of the journal recalls Llewellyn's travels, friendships, and experiences in New Zealand, particularly in Wellington where he was largely based. Some notable experiences are the many balls and dances attended in the Houses of Parliament in Wellington, releasing the first brown trout in North Island rivers with Sir James Hector, learning to take photographs with William Thomas Travers, meetings with railway contractor John Brogden and the military secretary and soldier Sir George Whitmore. The journal ends abruptly on 15 January 1872 even though Llewellyn indicates he is to remain in New Zealand for a longer period before travelling on to Australia. Title supplied by Library.
