Photographs taken by David Alexander De Maus at his Port Chalmers studio, ca 1875-1899. Collection consists mainly of portraits of sailing ships and steam ships visiting Port Chalmers, but also includes views of Port Chalmers and environs.

Provenance: The collection was divided on the death of De Maus; the shipping photos being taken to England by his daughter, Mrs D Grayston, another group being held in Outram by another daughter, Mrs O J Armour, and a third group being left in the studio, which had passed in 1932 to Miss Catherine Euphemia Matheson. She worked as a photographer from that address.
Processing information: Archivists notes - Originally arranged and described in 1993. Reference number changed from PAColl-3035 to PA-Group-00198 in 2008.

Description: Two American Liberty ships at Port Chalmers; number 97, the 'Frank Joseph Irwin' with a tugboat alongside; and number 93, the 'Lincoln Steffens'. A dredge is visible behind the 'Frank Joseph Irwin'; and the sheer-legs in the foreground. Probably photographed by Catherine Euphemia Matheson who took over the De Maus studio in 1932. Description: The steam ship Rotorua at Port Chalmers, photograph taken by David Alexander De Maus. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - "Rotorua"; Marginal notes on negative - top left - 222-227 Steam ship built in 1876 by W Denny & Bros for the Union Steam Ship Co of NZ. First ran in the Inter-colonial service in conjuction with the SS Wakatipu, Dunedin-Sydney via Onehunga. Also employed on the Wellington-Lyttelton ferry service, and later in the Wellington-Nelson service. Sold to Japanese buyers in 1903, recommissioned in the Far East, and renamed Shin Lee.
