Description: Contains images chiefly of Libya, but also of Syria, taken circa 1941-1943 by William Gladstone Middlemass during his service in World War II as a military dentist. - Album contains mostly military content with a focus on the New Zealand Dental Corps. Dental clinics in tents in a variety of desert locations are shown, and there is an image of the I Camp Dental Hospital building. Some images show the set-up of facilities. A variety of unidentified personnel (both dentists and patients) are shown during treatment. Soldiers are also seen in desert camps digging bunkers, cooking, eating, drinking, smoking, shaving, training, and doing administrative tasks. An informal image shows General Freyberg with his soldiers. Also contains a group portrait of soldiers [dental corps?] in New Zealand photographed by George Weigel. - Military convoys feature as well as individual vehicles, including a motorbike and a staff car that has been bombed. One utility vehicle has a silver fern logo painted on the back and in another images a convoy is photographed snaking up Halfaya Pass. Further images depicts an official visit with a woman and [French Foreign Legion?] soldiers, a desert graveyard in Libya with the graves of Sergeant Jaspers (died 15 Nov 1941) and an unidentified German prisoner of war (died 28 Nov 1941), bombed buildings, and soldiers canned food supplies. - Scenic and tourist shots include water wheels and river scenes in Syria, desert landscapes, local people and their dress, the collection of rocks by workers, donkeys, camels, the marble arch on the border of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, a marble statue with a woman holding an ear of wheat, a ruined fortress, the village of Matruh, the town of Bardia, and an unidentified seaside location. Recreational images include a day at the races, swimming in the ocean, and a garden cocktail party for Colonel Fuller on his departure with Brigadier Inglis and Major MacCallum also identified. Description: Collection comprises three war diaries covering the three year period of Cargill's military service in World War Two, 1943-1945. Diaries cover leaving Linton Military Camp and heading to Wellington for embarkation, voyage to Egypt, life as a soldier fighting in Italy. Cargill was shot in Cassino and had a lengthy period of recuperation in Italian military hospitals. Returned to New Zealand by hospital ship in December 1945. Diaries recount the daily life of a soldier and provide a unique look into the activities of a patient and staff member of a military hospital. Description: Album containing images of Egypt and Palestine taken by William Gladstone Middlemass during his service in World War II, 1940-1943. Also contains a few images of [England?]. - Album features scenes of military life, with a particular focus on the New Zealand Dental Corps and leisure activities. Various dental clinics are shown including a tent in the desert, the I Camp dental hospital, and a tooth brushing station with instructions for troops. A variety of unidentified soldiers (both dentists and patients) are shown during treatment. Men are also photographed at tourist sites, at the camp, in street scenes, and during a military funeral. They are engaged in activities including eating and drinking, writing letters, swimming and at the poolside, getting their hair cut, bartering, taking photographs, and in portraits. Middlemass is shown taking photographs in two images on the first page of the album. - Scenes from Egypt include the Sphinx and pyramids at Giza, Karnak Temple Complex, Maadi village and train station, the Australian & New Zealand Bazaar and the ANZAC store, Lehnert & Lindrock Art Publisher shop and proprietor, [Helwan Hospital?], Feluccas on the Nile, river scenes at Aswan, and birds and a hippopotamus at an unidentified zoo. Various scenes show Egyptian children and adults, agriculture, animals such as donkeys and camels, a man weaving at a loom, commercial transactions, and transportation of goods. - Scenes from Palestine include a few images of Tel Aviv (apartment buildings and ocean promenade), but mainly focus on Jerusalem. Photographs of the latter city include sites such as the Mount of Olives, Old City, Australian Imperial Forces Monument, Mosque of Omar, YMCA, Eden Hotel, David's Tower and Citadel, unidentified ancient ruins and the interior of an unidentified church. Street scenes include various religious processions [Orthodox Christian?] and street vendors including a cobbler and a goat. Also contains images of soldiers at the Allenby Bridge and scenic shots of the Jordan River. It is unclear whether images of villages and villagers, agricultural scenes (a camel herder and his animals, children and men with bunches of grapes), are taken in Palestine or Jordan. - Album also holds a small amount of photographs that were likely taken in England. Description: Diary continues from MSX-2544 with Malone commanding the New Zealand troops at the Suez Canal. Describes living and fighting conditions, the activities of his men, and conferences of Unit Command. Also comments on his own personal activities like visiting the dentist, reading mail and arranging a beer for his men. New Zealand troops withdrawn from the Canal on 26 Feb 1915 to Zeitoun Camp. Training his men in the hot winds of the Sahara Desert, and night Divisional exercises. Marched to Avenue de Koubbah on 25 Mar 1915. Four days leave from 29 Mar 1915, visits Luxor, Nile, Karnak, and the Tomb of Queen Nefertari. 3 Apr 1915 Malone comments that he has received word to embark for Turkey aboard the `Itonus'. Diary ends 9 Apr 1915 as troops ready to entrain to Alexandria. Malone takes photographs (for the families) of the graves of the three men of the Battalion who had died so far: Private John A Campbell, Private Albert G Cooper, and Private Bethel J Simpson.
