Cates, Charles, 1893-1971 : Diary of the ups and downs of a common soldier

Description: The diary is an expanded version of the skeleton diary kept by Cates while he was on active service and is illustrated with ink sketches and photographs. It covers the period 6 Aug 1914-10 Mar 1916 and describes Cates' war-time experiences. Accompanying the diary are items of military ephemera. Cates left New Zealand in Sep 1914 aboard the `Maunganui' and served with the New Zealand Field Ambulance in Egypt and Gallipoli. He was wounded in Gallipoli in Aug 1915 and invalided back to New Zealand where he was classified as unfit for further military service. Quantity: 2 volume(s). 1 folder(s). Both Mrs Cates and Mr Stevens are now deceased.

Includes detailed index of names and places mentioned and also supplementary biographical information about the Rutherfurd family. Source of title - Supplied by library Dr Thomas Rutherfurd went to India in 1805 in the East India Company's Medical Service and was attached to the 23rd Native Infantry. Description: Diaries kept during First World War. Entries begin when he left Auckland in Feb 1916 until his death in Sep 1916 at the Somme, France. Describes the voyage on the 'Ulumaroa', alongside the 'Mokoia' and the 'Hinemoana'. Mentions stopping at Albany in Australia and being able to get off the ship and visit Mr McBride the curator of a public park there. Talks about life and people on board the ship, including the weather, food, training, leisure, and his work in both the ship hospital and kitchen. Details travelling to and through France by boat and then train, comments on the people, the buildings and scenery, and the parks and trees witnessed. Describes life in the base camp behind the lines around Armentieres, and the trench and aerial warfare he observes. Talks about being shelled and reports on raiding parties and the resulting deaths and injuries. Comments on hospital conditions and illnesses, injuries, and casualties. Particular mention is made of the baths taken by soldiers. Also includes a transcript of the diaries made by Mrs Betty Cameron in 2014 Source of title - Supplied by Library Private John Readhead worked as a Domain Curator in Ashburton prior to serving with the New Zealand Medical Corps No. 3 Field Ambulance in World War One. Description: Includes diaries kept by Dr Bliss when he was with the Indian Army during WWII, serving mainly in Africa. his work included involvement with NZ troops and is evidently a unique record of medical work during the war. Also included are later diaries kept of his life in New Zealand since 1947, other wartime ephemera and completed drafts of philosophical and autobiographical works by Bliss. Journals (1994-1996); journals kept while studying art (1991-1995); papers relating to John Banks and political matters (1986-1987), and to earthquakes (1996) (A97-033) Source of title - Supplied Bliss was a surgeon with the Indian Army in World War Two working mostly in Africa; he emigrated to NZ in 1947.
