Description: Slides record New Zealand co-operative enterprises flourishing in the early 1980s. Many are co-operative farms, gardens, craft factories, and shops. Other slides relate to or have been created by CELT (Co-operative Enterprise and Loan Trust). There is also a sequence on the Salvation Army Work Scheme in Taranaki. There are three information slide sequences, one called "Good Work-an introduction to New Zealand Worker Cooperatives" created by CELT, and "Renewable energy for today and tomorrow" from the Centre for Alternative Technology. Description: Land clearance and development projects during the 1950s. Photographs show examples of techniques and machinery used for bringing in land such as rolling and crushing scrub and using cattle to crush and clear lupins. Much of the land developed for agriculture during this period was pumice land. There is a slide sequence designed to show methods for establishing pasture on this particular soil type, and a number of other slides showing the finished product -- productive farms in the Rotorua area. Landblocks named in this collection are, Newstead Block, "Rushden" Waipukurau, Lynwood F. S., and Okahukura Block. Comments on the effect of the Depression and World War II on neighbourliness. Recalls the children's farm jobs and his work driving a team of horses after leaving school. Recalls family holidays to Owaka, Otawa and Riverton. Describes music at the dances, meeting his wife, his engagement and wedding. Talks about conscription for World War II and being released to work on Jenkin's farm. Mentions lambing, feeding, shearing and checking stock. Describes his first farm, which was a tussock block, and his first car, a Vauxhall. Describes the process of clearing the land. Mentions ploughing, soil condition, buying horses and operating a horse team. Details the stock, which was mainly Romney ewes, the increase in stock numbers, the role of the stock firm as stock buyer and bank, farm equipment, the size and cost of farms over the years, the location of dairy factories and freezing works and the work performed by women. Talks about moving to Otaki aged four years. Refers to being taught by a governess, horse riding to school, teaching conditions at Te Horo School, steam trains, boarding at Wanganui Collegiate, compulsory military training on leaving school, and sports. Talks about working as a wool classer on Happy Valley Station, a McKenzie family farm in Canterbury, at age 18 years. Mentions using horses and poisoning possums. Talks about delivering milk in drums by truck to Otaki Railway Milk Treatment Station, to be processed into cheese, butter or bottled milk at the Rahui Milk Treatment Factory. Mentions events at the factory, some employees, work being replaced by tankers, and moving to Canada. Recalls driving kerosene powered caterpillar tractor at age 10. Mentions learning to drive and getting his heavy traffic licence. Recalls extensive flooding in Pahiko, and flood control contractors, Downer & Co. Describes share milking work, naming several milkers, including Marmaduke Atkinson, Bunny Hawea, and Joe Broughton.
