Childhood in the Kumeu-Huapai district oral history project

Description: Interviews with a number of people who spent their childhood in this rural district north west of Auckland City during the 1910s and 1920s. The area was long used as a portage by Maori between the Kaipara and Waitemata harbours. Pakeha initially settled during the mid to late 1800s and, after forest and gum clearance, the area was slowly developed into dairy farms. In 1915 nearly 5000 acres of scrubland at Kumeu North (renamed Huapai) were subdivided as orchards, mixed farms and weekend homes. There was an influx of new residents (including weekend only residents) following this. Huapai School opened in 1919. Description: Lantern slides relating to propagation of fruit trees, 1930s-1950s. Photographer(s) are unidentified, but most images appear to be copies of illustrations and texts from an unidentified gardening publication. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the subject. Includes examples of grafts, pruning, and training methods on apple trees (and one for a black currant bush). Also shows "extensive cropping" in Tasmania. Three further images show hyacinth seeds shooting, bulbs "crosscut and scooped", and pots for cuttings from rhododendrons. Description: Transparencies of the Tasman District, circa January 1969. Taken by Les Cleveland. Waimea West photographs show St Michael's Church as well as the grave of Catherine Anne Thorburn and Kohn Kerr. Also John Palmer's house "The Gables" and tobacco and hops growing on a farm. Wakefield images show the post office and an unidentified group raspberry picking on a farm. Raspberries and apples are also photographed growing on a farm in Redwood Valley. Golden Bay images show Tarakohe Cement Works and adjacent coastal area, cows being herded on road at Onekaka. Photographs from Collingwood Queen Carnival show the tossing of hay bales and three photographs of the Takaka Citizens Band. Four photographs show a Scripture Union "Crusaders in Schools" children's service on Kaiteriteri Beach. A model of Calgary and of Jesus's tomb is made out of sand and other beach materials. Description: Rodda describes his life including background from his birth and arrival in NZ in 1884, his life on his family's farm, near Rangiriri, now Te Kauwhata, the Maori in the district, including their use of flour sacks for clothing, mosquitoes, school days, his first employment on Waerenga Experimental Farm, his experiences with early, and later, grape and fruitgrowing. In March 1905 he began work on road and rail construction at Oio and he describes work conditions and the work in some detail, until he returned to Waerenga inAug 1905. He describes his various positions within the department, often as an inspector. He joined the Legion of Frontiersmen in 1913 and the Hamilton Company of the National Military Reserve in 1939. He describes duties as a justice of the peace, his experiences during the depression and his appointment as farm manager and college superintendent at Ruakura Farm of Instruction in 1932, and breeding of pedigree milking cattle.
