Description: Bifolium from an English liturgical lectionary for the sanctorale in Latin, possibly from East Anglia, dated from the fifteenth century. Written in ink on bifolium leaf of vellum in double columns of 33 lines in Textualis Formata (Textus Rotundus) hand. Text: Folio (a) is the latter part of the life of St Chad, his feast celebrated on 2 March, taken from Bede, Historia Ecclesiastica Anglicana, Bk IV, Chapter 3; folio (b) is an account of the Translation of St Edmund, celebrated on 29 April. Written in double columns of 19 lines in a continental protogothic book hand. Text: On recto, the beginning of Pseudo-Origen, Lamentatio Sanctae Mariae Magdalenae, inc. ‘Maria stabat ad monumentum plorans. Audiuimus mariam foris stantem’, as far as ‘Quis enim mulier ista potuit `faceré nisi plorare que intollerabilem habebat dolorem & nullum inueniebat?’ On verso, unidentified text related to the canonical Hours. Description: The hymn for Vespers on the verso, 'Et post Christi passionem', is from 'Deus qui cunctum hominem de limo terrae creavit', the office hymn for the Sarum Hours of the Conception of the Virgin. This text is also found in the York Horae (Rouen: G. Bernard and J. Cousin, 1517, STC 16104), f.72v, and the Sarum Horae (London: Wynkyn de Worde, 1523, STC 15934), f.136v. Description: The recto begins with the concluding portion of the antiphon at the magnificat for the Feast of the imprinting of the holy stigmata on St Francis: Crucis apparet, hostia tensis in Cruce brachiis, sex alis tecta variis cum vultus elegantia: quae Francisci cor attrahit augens ei charismata, suaque sacra Stigmata in eius carne protrahit. The verso begins with the antiphon for Vespers for the Dedication of St Michael, the Archangel: Stetit angelus iuxta aram templi habens turibulum aureum in manu sua. The text for the antiphon on the verso is from Revelation 8:3. Source of title - Supplied title Music in square chant notation, with red 4-line staves and moveable C and F clefs. Later-added pencil number 1388 on the recto on lower right-hand corner. Physical Description: Vellum, single leaf, 615 x 435 mm Contemporary vellum infill along spine edge.
