Wahiao (Whakarewarewa, N.Z.)

The whare nui at Te Pākira marae, Whakarewarewa. The first Wahiao was built on the general site on land donated by Mita Taupopoki of the Ngati Wahiao. Wahiao II was opened in 1908. Wahiao III was opened 16 November 1940 by the Governor General of New Zealand, Lieutenant-Colonel Viscount Galway.

Description: Invitation card and programme, with handwritten name of addressee Hoani Te Heuheu. The front cover shows a photograph of the meeting house and an illustration of the Arawa canoe. Inside are illustrations of Tamatekapua the captain of the Arawa canoe entering the estuary of Maketu in the year 1340, and of Wahiao a celebrated chief of the Arawa people, with a whakapapa showing how he is descended from Tamatekapua. The back cover shows the programme, and a photograph of the late chief Mita Taupopoki. The invitation is issued by Te Aonui Dennan, H Tai Mitchell and the Tuhourangi and Wahiao tribes. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This sheet shows aspects of Holmridge farm at Waihue, including a view of cows in the milking shed; cows in a field; a stream and Tutamoe peak in the distance; sheep being rounded up and penned preparatory to being shorn, Clive Woods shearing a sheep; an aerial topdressing plane in the air; a family group on the tray of a truck; family group of Clive, Barbara and young Vern; one of "Grandpa" Vernon Woods with his grandson "young Vern"; sheep station near Dargaville. Various scenes away from the farm show Queen Street, Auckland; Auckland Harbour with Rangitoto in the distance; main street in Te Awamutu; Mount Pirongia; a bridge over the Waikato River at Hamilton; the Grand Hotel at Rotorua; a steam vent in Park Square, Rotorua; the gardens at the Government Sanatorium, and a game of bowls in progress; and steam vents and the Wahiao meeting house at Whakarewarewa. Description: Photographs and postcards, mostly commercial images circa 1920s to 1960s, some with annotations. Photographers mainly unidentified. Showing scenes around Whakarewarewa, Rotorua District, including Waikite, Pohutu, and Papakura geysers. One image shows the exterior of the wharenui Wahiao. Many images of Rangitiaria Dennan (known as Guide Rangi). One image of Dennan and a man who is carving a wooden post is annotated "Guide Rangi and grandfather". In many images Dennan is posing next to pataka, waharoa, or wharenui. Two images show other unidentified guides. Two images are adhered to either side of a piece of cardboard (one with an annotation "Fairy Springs 1927") and accompanied by a note from the donor that reads "Taken by a member of the visiting Dorly Carte Opera Co UK on 1927 tour of N.Z." [sic]. Also contains one annotated postcard with an image of Richard John Seddon, postmarked 1906.
