Wharenui at Waitangi National Treaty (Upper marae) grounds, Waitangi, Bay of Islands. Built with the proceeds of a fund which had been established by Lord Bledisloe in 1934. Opened in 1940. Fully carved Maori meeting house, which is representative of all Iwi (regional tribes) of New Zealand.

Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Colour slide photographs taken by John Reinder Fijn of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Waitangi, 6 Feb 1963. Images include the Queen walking around the Treaty Grounds, meeting the Maori Queen Te Atairangikaahu, with kuia and kaumatua (many of whom are wearing kakahu) including [Turi Carroll?], standing in her car and waving to the crowd, outside Te Whare Runanga with Minister of Maori Affairs Ralph Hanan and James Henare, and with the Governor General Bernard Fergusson and unidentified women. Prince Philip is at the Queen's side in all these images. Also includes an image of an unidentified Maori warrior issuing the challenge during a powhiri at Te Tii Marae (with Te Tiriti o Waitangi hall in the background), and various Maori dignitaries hongiing, including Lady Ruti and Sir Eruera Tirikatene, both of whom are wearing a kiwi feather kakahu. Eleven taken at Waitangi (Northland), during an unidentified event at the treaty grounds (Waitangi Day celebrations?). Description: One side of sheet shows photographs of all fourteen pairs of carved poupou or wall slabs in the interior of the meeting house, as well as tukutuku designs, a carved chair and two pou-tokopmanawa (free-standing pillars supporting the ridgepole). The other side shows interior photographs of the north (rear) wall as a whole, the south wall as a whole, and photographs of the exterior of the building, and details of lintel, proch poupou, tekoteko (of Kupe), amo, matapihi and pare, as well as plaques.
