Rangitihi (Okere Falls, N.Z.)

Two whare of this name have stood at Taheke (also known as Opatia) at Okere Falls, on the northern shore of Lake Rotoiti in the Bay of Plenty. (Information from the book 'Maori Wood Sculpture', by T Barrow, Reed, 1969, page 77.) The first was built in the 1860s, and belonged to Te Waata Turanui of Ngati Pikiao. Sections are now in Auckland Museum: . Another panel is in St Petersburg.

The second whare named Rangitihi was dedicated in 1951 as a memorial to the fallen in World War II, and is still in use. It contains carvings by Kaka Niao, assisted by Tiakiawa Tahuriorangi and George Emery.
