Rongopai (Waituhi, N.Z.)

Whare nui at Rongopai Marae, at Waituhi, near Patutahi, Poverty Bay. It is a uniquely painted house that was created in honour of the prophet Te Kooti. Pou pou panels were restored and returned to the house in July 1975.

Description: Transparencies taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton of meeting houses and other structures on marae in New Zealand. Each slide mount is annotated with the name or brief description, and/or the location. Dates are sometimes annotated. Images include the King Mahuta monument at Rukumoana Marae, the wharenui at Mangamaunu Marae, the wharenui at Whakarongotai Marae, the wharenui at Rongopai Marae (including detail of the painted porch), the wharenui at Okorihi Marae, Te Rangihekeiho wharenui at Atene Marae, buildings at Koroniti Marae, and a whakairo at a "pa" at Greytown [probably Papawai Marae]. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Transparencies were stored in a plastic slide case, capable of holding 30-40 mounted slides, in two stacks. The case was labelled "Meeeting Houses". Description: Contains b&w photographic prints taken in 1969, chiefly images of the meeting house Miringa Te Kakara near Tiroa and Bennydale taken by Axel Poignant. Shows interior and exterior views, including the nearby dining hall. Also five further images taken by Poignant: two of painted panels inside Rongopai meeting house (Iwi: Te Aitanga a Mahaki) at Waituhi (also known as Oruaiwi), Gisborne region and three of Maori. Two of these show an older Maori man (Fred Teka) and a Maori boy (Vernon Tipou), demonstrating a haka on the verandah Te Whai a Te Motu meeting house at Mataatua. The other shows Paetawa Miki at Maungapohatu. Also two taken by Poignant's wife Roslyn featuring the plaque at the base of the flagstaff at Kie Kie Marae (Ngati Porou) Mangatuna, East Coast.
