Schramm, Paul and Diny : Papers

Description: The Paul & Diny Schramm collection reflects the lives and careers of two migrant musicians. The papers date mainly from 1887-1984; however early papers of the Soetermeer family dated 1794-1852 are included. Particular strengths of the collection lie in the music scores of works by Paul Schramm, the correspondence and the large number of newsclippings and programmes. The collection reflects musical life in Europe from the late 1890s to the early 1930s, the Schramm's musical activities in Indonesia ca 1934, their work in New Zealand, and Paul Schramm's subsequent move, career and death in Australia. Arrangement: On arrival at the Library a box list was compiled. However, in 1992, due to the Schramm centenary when articles, a concert and exhibition were planned, work began on arranging and describing the collection while the materials were being used by researchers and staff; this resulted in some resorting and renumbering of items. The collection is divided into thirteen series. The original order has been preserved where possible. The records of the Leschitezky Association of New Zealand, held by Diny Schramm who was its first president, were the first to be deposited, followed by scores of early printed music, works by Paul Schramm and others, and papers collected by Paul and Diny Schramm. Description: Collection comprises photographic prints, negatives, and transparencies, including mounted slides, with some prints mounted in albums, and manuscript papers including newspaper clippings, periodical articles, and papers relating to Kathleen Hancock's research and journalism work from the period 1955 to 2004. Photographs document visits to various islands as both a journalist and for leisure travel to American Samoa, Bali, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii and California, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tasmania, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Some photographs also document family gatherings and other occasions in New Zealand. As a journalist Hancock attended meetings of the South Pacific Commission and photographed delegates on these occasions. The collection documents people, the natural and built environment, tourism infrastructure and facilities, transport and accommodation, culture and performing arts. Colour mounted slides document destinations visited by Kathleen Hancock during the period 1968 to 1988. The papers in the collection represent Hancock's work as both a journalist and author, including working material from the two biographical books: 'Sir Albert Henry: His Life and Times' (Auckland: Methuen, 1979), and 'Men of Mana' (Wellington: Steele Roberts, 2003). Some photographic materials show evidence of having been salvaged from a fire, circa 1999. Description: Papers include letters to Denmark, a history of the Scandinavian church in New Zealand 1865 - ca 1900 by Mads with a translation and history from 1928 by Ansgar, sermons and diaries of Ansgar Christensen, 1928-1957. Also includes Clem Koch's history of the Lutheran Church in New Zealand Source of title - Supplied Mads Christensen was sent to New Zealand by the Inner Mission Board of Denmark in 1886. He was ordained and inducted to the Mauriceville Parish in 1886; from 1893 he served in Palmerston North. From 1928 to 1958 his son, Ansgar, served in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Palmerston North. Description: This collection comprises the private and family papers of the New Zealand anthropologist Dr Reo Fortune. Includes manuscripts, photographs, maps and research notes, mainly on his main research areas in New Guinea, although there is also material on Burmese tribal groups, Yao society in China and on the Omaha Indians of North America. Fortune's second wife, Eileen Fortune (nee Pope), a copious letter writer, kept detailed diaries, and her papers form a large part of the collection. Fortune was previously married to Margaret Mead (8 Oct 1928, in Auckland) 1928-1935. Also includes books, many heavily annotated, offprints of articles and other printed material. Much of the material in this collection has been recorded by Fortune in the indigenous languages and dialects of the peoples he was researching. Languages include New Guinean Papuan languages, Chinese, Burmese and the language of the Omaha Indians. Noted as one of the pioneers of social anthropology in Melanesia, Fortune made siginificant contributions in the field of research regarding the Islanders of Papua New Guinea, Omaha Indians of North America, Yao Society in China and the Chin peoples of Burma. Material relating to Arthur Aris King includes a series of newspaper articles by Custos (Thomas Trood), G E L Westbrook and by Spectator (possibly Trood or King), a collection of clippings about Robert Louis Stevenson, photocopies of school work and personal papers relating to Mary Vakanielato and papers relating to King, Samoa and the Pacific; `James Baxter Fleck, 1867-1939' in which Hunt remembers her father's life (2000) and `Reminiscences, Susana and Kingi' in which Hunt records stories she remembers for their descendants (2003). Description: The collection includes official records of the First New Zealand Mounted Rifles Association as well as personal papers relating to war history, the Free Masons, and tramping in New Zealand during the first two decades of the twentieth century. The First New Zealand Mounted Rifles Association records include minutes of the Association 1901-1905, financial papers 1946-1967, correspondence and other papers of the secretary 1929-1969, and copies of the Association Bulletin 1929-1956. T W Brown served with the First Contingent of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles during the South African War. During the return voyage to New Zealand in 1901, the First New Zealand Mounted Rifles Association was formed with the intention of holding a reunion each year on Trafalgar Day.
