Description: Gives her family background, details about her education and the family's life which revolved round the Methodist Church. Notes that her father owned the drapery shop in Masterton. Talks about the family's social life, church and Bible Class, attitudes to drinking, dancing and World War II. Describes herself as a Wairarapa basketball representative who also did lifesaving. Talks about her desire to work with Maori and learning the language. Describes nursing training at Masterton, nursing the Japanese prisoners of war after the riot at the Featherston camp, tuberculosis nursing and maternity nursing. Describes Plunket training in 1947, marriage in 1948 and being a Plunket nurse in Auckland. Comments on the Plunket nurse community and general practitioners. Talks about her wedding, her husband going to Theological College and a brief period in Masterton before her husband's appointment to the Methodist Mission in New Guinea. Notes that they lived on the island of Buka in Northern Bougainville and stayed in New Guinea from 1949-1963. Describes a high infant mortality and the prevalence of disease. Talks about unpaid work at the hospital. Gives details of local birth habits, infanticide, sexual diseases and sexuality. Describes the birth of her children in New Guinea, her knowledge of four local languages and translation of the New Testament. Talks about returning to New Zealand, settling in Taranaki and the difficulties of readjusting. Notes that she still finds NZ ways difficult. Description: Royston Evans was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Recalls his youth and attending the University of Manchester where he studied science and technology. Describes being in the Army and also wanting to be a professional cricketer. Talks about his social life, particularly dancing, lecturing at the Post Office training school, getting married in 1960 and deciding to emigrate to New Zealand. Recalls working for Plessey in Auckland in 1967 and then going to Wellington. Describes joining the New Zealand Post Office where the technological revolution was starting. Mentions privatisation of the Post Office and changes in staff numbers. Describes going to Gisborne in 1985 to look after exchanges and replacement in 1990 by computer controlled equipment. Discusses Post Office redundancies and morale. Comments on a recent return visit to Britain and his feeling that there is more of a class system in New Zealand. Discusses provincialism in New Zealand, parochialism in Hawkes Bay, the issue of the location of the hospital and the existence of three local authorities in a small area. Discusses his early retirement, joining the Friends of the Turnbull Library and the Historic Places Trust, being a library volunteer and taking up cricket umpiring. Talks about his children and time spent helping his son and daughter-in-law run the Tarawera Tavern. Description: Doreen Greene was born in Hastings in 1932. Recalls a childhood where the family moved around a lot and her father drank increasingly. Talks about sometimes living in tents or caravans. Talks about the excitement of settling in Hastings. Recalls leaving school the day she was fifteen. Describes her first job ticket writing, a job waitressing at a tearooms and working in a lingerie shop. Recalls her uncles and aunts, family gatherings, Christmases at Hastings, her grandfather becoming a Brethren and her grandmother remaining Anglican. Describes marrying in 1953 and having five children in under seven years. Describes moving to Otorohanga for husband Ray's first teaching position. Talks about returning to Hastings, the Easter Festival and the A and P show. Describes their lives and mentions that many of them are teachers. Recalls attending the official welcome for one of her sons as Headmaster of Wanganui Collegiate. Comments on her work with youth groups, particularly disadvantaged young people. Comments on MMP, the need for more women in Parliament, and testing at Moruroa Atoll. Discusses the issue of the Hawkes Bay hospital. Description: The minute book covers period February 1952 to July 1957. It contains a copy of the constitution of the Women's Auxiliary and a report on the discussions that led to the decision to disband it. The Inter-Church Council on Public Affairs was set up in 1941 as a result of wartime needs. Since World War II immigrant welfare, prison reform, film censorship and care of the aged have become major concerns for the Council. The Women's Auxiliary of the Inter-Church Council on Public Affairs was set up in 1952 because of a feeling that women's points of view were not receiving sufficient attention in the Council. It was wound up in 1957 due to a lack of support from some of the member churches and a feeling in the parent body that it was undesirable to have a separate women's grouping.
