Description: Cartoons on New Zealand social issues and politics. New Zealand switches from milk in bottles to milk in cartons. Hayley's Comet turns out to be disappointing for most star gazers. High number of requests for aid from sports and charity groups. Children deny tobacco advertising influences their smoking habits. Core samples are taken from the hull of the New Zealand entrant to the America's Cup. 1986 - the International Year of Peace - $1,746,000,000,000 spent on weapons. Mother's Day again. Burglar makes himself at home. General election candidates begin their hand-shaking tour of the rural areas. There's a big turnout for the rugby on election day. People are getting overloaded with the morning radio bad 'news'. Christmas shopping bedlum is upon us. Post Offices are closed around the country. Children embrace cigarette smoking. Hospital emergency outpatients restrict their services in an effort to cut costs. Pakeha consider how they can benefit from the Maori land claim process. The law struggles to deal with complications of using force in your own self defence. Description: Manihira Te Ra Purewa Royal, known as Hira, was born in Otaki in 1932, and has lived there all her life, except when at boarding school. Recalls belonging to the Takarore whanau, which includes the families Hohipuha, Raika, Te Waiata, and Nikora (Nicholls). Mentions the Te Horo cheese factory, the Rahui dairy factory, milk at school, and milk delivered in cans. Talks about school and boarding at Hukarere in Napier, her teachers, the principal, Miss Hunter, prayers, strictness, duties, other pupils. Mentions her 11 children, her whangai (foster) daughter and her brothers and sisters. Recalls leaving school in 1949, marrying in 1950, living on the marae, then on Miss Lochore's property. Mentions using a copper washer and an outside hand wringer. Talks about their home in Otaki, built using a Maori Affairs Loan in 1954, and later extended. Talks about the family benefit. Mentions her mother-in-law, Whakarato Royal, who lived with them for 26 years. Refers to the Otaki Maternity Home, where mothers rested for 14 days after birth. Refers to Playcentre involvement. Talks about working for Koha Ora, at Kimberley Hospital and the Otaki Children's Health Camp. Description: Circular cardboard tops, used before the advent of metal foil tops. They were pushed down inside the bottle-rim. Each top shows the day of the week of the delivery. The milk tops are stamped in green ink, the cream tops in red ink. There are two green milk tops for each day of the week, except for Sunday when there are three. There are also red cream (40% double cream) tops, one for Friday, two for Saturday and one for Sunday. For an illustration of the use of these tops, see poster image at Eph-D-HEALTH-1940s-01. The second shows a milk vendor arguing with an employer for a six day week. The lower left shows a man who has brought home bristol cream sherry instead of milk and the the lower right shows a man showing his wife the 'do-it-yourself' kit he has brought home, a cow.
