Description

An album containing photographs of landscapes, cityscapes, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, glaciers, geothermal areas, mountains, roading and train networks from across New Zealand, The album also includes a handful of photographs with Māori subjects.

The photographs were taken by Leslie Hinge, circa 1900-1940. Many feature short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations.

Images show various subjects including:

- Panoramas of cities and towns such as Wellington, Napier, Wanganui, Tauranga, Rotorua, Auckland, Russell, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Queenstown.

- Views of geothermal areas and reserves from around the central plateau, including Orakei Korako, Whakarewarewa, Ōhinemutu, the Dragon's Mouth Geyser, Wairakei, Pohutu Geyser, Whakarewarewa and Hongi's Track.

- Images of lakes from the Rotorua district, including lakes Rotorua, Ōkataina, and Rotoma.

- Motor vehicle traffic bridges and railway viaducts from across New Zealand, such as the Mohaka, Makohine and Hāpuawhenua viaducts.

- Rivers, waterways and waterfalls from across the North and South islands, including the Waikato, Wairoa, Tāngarākau, Wanganui, Pelorus and Avon rivers; the Aratiatia Rapids on the upper Waikato River; and the Whangārei Falls and Rainbow falls at Kerikeri.

- Scenic views of South island lakes such as Lake Matherson, Lake Te Anau, Lake Ianthe, Lake Mapourika, and Lake Wakatipu.

- South Island scenic destinations such as Franz Joseph Glacier, Mount Cook, The Hermitage Hotel, the Milford Track, Milford Sound and Mitre Peak.

- A Ngāti Tūwharetoa kapa haka group performing a haka peruperu.

- Māori women at Ōhinemutu, cooking and preparing flax for weaving and mat making.

The photo album Includes the stylised word 'Photographs' embossed in gold leaf on the front cover.

Arrangement: The album contains handwritten notes at album pages 31, 49, 67 and 100. The notes relate to dates when the photographs were taken, and to individual photographs that were reproduced for framing. The notes have been placed within clear enclosures for preservation reasons, and original order maintained by keeping the notes with the original album pages.

Three loose prints at album pages 1 and 41 have been placed in clear enclosures within the album.The photographs have been kept interleaved in the album in their original order.

Provenance: Donor is the granddaughter of Leslie Hinge and acquired the collection from her mother, Ruby Blanche Keen (nee Hinge), after her mother's death in 2001. The collection had previously been stored under the family house at Oriental Terrace, Wellington.
