Description

A programme for the anniversary fete to be held on 24 January 1848. The British coat of arms is at top centre (lion and unicorn). The programme lists aquatic sports (sailing, rowing, canoe race); horse races including a hurdle race, hack race, mule race, pony race, and Maori horse race. There were also a foot race, jingling match, jumping in sacks, climbing a greasy pole, catching a soap-necked goose and grinning through a collar.

The second day included a hurdle race and a hack race for horses beaten on the previous day; and a Maori war dance. The notice is signed by secretary and treasurer Mr J H Wallace.

"Early settlers' reunion" in the 'Evening Post', 14 December 1912, page 3 reminisces about the games played at these early events on Te Aro Flat.

The game of "Grinning through a collar" (and some predictable consequences) is described in "Canterbury rejoicings; grinning through a horse collar", 'Hawke's Bay Herald', 25 July 1863, page 4.
